Default MEDIA STUDIES HELP! - Rock music questions for my rock magazine courework, ANYONE!

Okay fellow rock music lovers, please answer the following questions for my rock music magazine coursework if you don't mind! My name is Holly, I am obsessed with Muse, Rolling Stnoes, The Beatles, The Kinks, Daft Punk, Red Hot Chili Peppers and of course Arctic Monkeys!

    1. Would you prefer to see on the front cover of a rock music magazine:

    a) Males and 1 female (Attractive female btw)
    b) All Males
    c) All females

Don't be biased because of your gender!

    2. Which BRITISH rock magazine do you buy? If you're in the UK?

    a) Q
    b) Kerrang!
    c) Rolling Stone
    d) NME
    e) None/Other

    3. What rock festivals, concerts, gig etc have you been too recently? (I myself can't keep up because I'm in a boarding school *sobs*)

    4. What websites do you use frequently? (e.g. Facebook, YouTube)

    5. Do you like the rock/alternative rock band name 'The Novembers'?

    6. Do you like the magazine name 'Nowadays'?
(Its ironic, as the magazine older audience would refer to this generations music (e.g. Katy Perry whatever) like this, say..'Nowadays kids listen to pop, but in my day I listened to The Kinks (60s))

    e) None/Other - used to rock metal hammer and kerrang but focus on more online or independants now for unsigned music...

    6. Do you like the magazine name 'Nowadays'?
(Its ironic, as the magazine older audience would refer to this generations music (e.g. Katy Perry whatever) like this, say..'Nowadays kids listen to pop, but in my day I listened to The Kinks (60s))

    Hey Holly,

I must admit this forum does seem to be all eyes and no voices but maybe you just need to be patient - though that doesnt help if youve got coursework deadlines ay!?

Anyways, here are some more answers for you if you need them...

    1. Would you prefer to see on the front cover of a rock music magazine:

I dont have a preference. If anything, id like to see less pictures of band members posing and more of them performing live or captured working in a studio...something to show them applying their craft naturally rather than getting dolled up for a photoshoot which essentially has nothing to do with their actual music.

    2. Which BRITISH rock magazine do you buy? If you're in the UK?

    e) None/Other. I used to buy kerrang occasionally when i was in my teens, but now the internet is here, i source any musical info i want from that

    3. What rock festivals, concerts, gig etc have you been too recently? (I myself can't keep up because I'm in a boarding school *sobs*)

Ive seen tons of shows over the years, the last concert i went to was Primus in London. Festival wise, i went to the Ozfest before it morphed into Download and i was pretty underwhelmed with that mainly because it was too one-dimensional for my tastes. Since 2001 ive been going to the Roskilde festival in Denmark every year. For me, that hands down beats anything ive ever looked at here in the UK, not just for the diversity and quality of the music but also in terms of both the cost and the type of people who go there.

    4. What websites do you use frequently? (e.g. Facebook, YouTube)

I used to use several p2p sites but they are unreliable so now i mainly use torrent sites to source new music. Im a big fan of Soundcloud, i think thats an excellent musical resource and forums like this one sometimes have some gems on them! And of course the usual Facebook, Youtube and Spotify aswell

    5. Do you like the rock/alternative rock band name 'The Novembers'?

No i dont. In general i think we have MORE than enough bands out there that begin with 'the' so it feels unoriginal to me and therefore also not very memorable. Id probably just get it mixed up with 'The Saturdays' and im sure 'The Novembers' wouldnt appreciate that!

    6. Do you like the magazine name 'Nowadays'?
(Its ironic, as the magazine older audience would refer to this generations music (e.g. Katy Perry whatever) like this, say..'Nowadays kids listen to pop, but in my day I listened to The Kinks (60s))

Yeah i like this name. It makes an obvious reference to the subject matter being concerned with modern topics and because its a common everyday phrase, its easy to remember and has a broad appeal across a range of ages. However, it could be argued that the word 'Nowadays' doesnt specifically relate to music but in conversation it often can (such as in the example you give) and considering that names like 'Q' and 'kerrang' dont really have any obvious musical connotations either, i dont think its too important. In fact, the more i say the word, the more i like it! A catchy, informal name like this is ideal for a publication concerned with a diverse subject like music.

I hope that helps with your college coursework!
