Default What's your favorite way to record your demo mixes?

A couple guys I know use mini-disc, then put it on CD. I'm thinking about recording straight to hard drive via Sound Forge, then burning it to CD. Anyone use CD-RWs? What do the pros do when they're not computer-mixing the $$$$? DAT?

It's high time I moved on from cassette tapes.

I firstly make sure ive got good cartridges on the deck, ortofons or alike then put each turntable into a DI Box to boost it to line level, then into a stereo compressor / Limiter then into my mixer , then the line out of the mixer into my sound card running pro tools, then record it as 24/96khz and then convert the file into 16bit SD11 then burn it in wave burner as a red book standard CD.

JJ, the compressor/limiter sounds like a good idea, but I have two questions:

1. What's a DI Box?

2. I don't have Pro Tools, but I can get it. Is that what you use to convert it to 16bit SD11 after recording?

So you take the outs from each TT > DI > Comp > mixer? and then mixer to ProTools?

I just run things straight into my MOTU 828 from the mixer. I do like the idea of the DIs and Compressors tho...nice for evening out levels. I may have to try that...I'd have to buy another compressor though. Ah, always need more!

JJ> My guitarist friend just told me what a DI Box is. So I know what you're talking about. THANKS for the advice.

ProTools records as 16bit SDII files on Macs.

Oh, I have a PC. So I would probably just record on Sound Forge and save as a WAV, unless anyone else has any other advice.

I take each output from the turntables and use a pre amp to boost them to line level. Then split the line level signals in two. I then record from the XLR outputs on the mixer and simultaneously record the individual outputs from each turntable. That way, if there are any mistakes from the DJ , I can recreate and touch up the mix using the individual signals.

I then apply a little broadband compression on a low ratio/low threshold setting and a tiny bit of limiting just to even things out without affecting an already heavily compressed signal.

What protools system are you using, HD????? I didn't know protools could use 96khz unless you have the new high definition system.

with me, the Turntables go into my mixer, and using the "booth" output, i feed it into the "line in" socket of my PC... sorted!

i obviously have no idea what you lot are on about

Raptor> Sound Forge will let you record until your hard drive runs out of space. No limitations as far as I know. I've already used it to encode all my old mixtapes as WAV, then I use Streambox Ripper to convert the WAV to MP3 for internet download. So I know it can handle 45, 60, 70, 120 minutes..whatevah. At the moment, I don't have enough web space for my MP3s, but I send them to people through AIM on a case-by-case basis.

Qwest> I don't have all the fancy gadgetry these guys have, so I'll probably do the same thing you do, except go straight from the Record Output on my mixer to the Line-In on the soundcard. After that, I think I can fake their stereo compression techniques by converting it to MP3 before I burn. *lol* Streambox Ripper will send it through an equalizer while I rip the MP3, if I so desire. I'll see what it does to the sound. I may burn straight from WAV instead.

you can't do the stereo compression technique on the whole mix...needs to be done before the mixing - each table needs to come into the mixer compressed for it to work right.

Do you use those when you play live too? Or just when recording? When I was in a band, we just used them for the mixdown on our demo tapes.

Bone Idol> I don't think the finished product sounds as good, there are often glitches for me. What sounds worse is converting from MP3 to Real Audio in Sound Forge. I've just always used Streambox to make my mp3s, so I guess it's habit more than anything.

I'm wondering if the "superclubs" would have that kind of setup built into their systems...

Never having looked at one closely, I wouldn't know...
