Default What PC is good for producing beats on?

ie. what speed ---> 1 ghz?
Decent soundcards?
Microphone?

I'm looking for a fairly basic setup, for a basic price
but ---> is very effective.

Also how big should your hardrive be? How much space does each tune take up etc...

Thanks,

Mike.

500+ mhz
20 gb hard drive
128 mb ram
Sound Blaster Live sound card
8x CDRW

this is my set up, and it's enough for me. cost me $300 to have it special built, think that was a good price

you can make tunes on pretty much anything, depending on software really.

Find what software you want to use, then buy a computer to exceed the minimum specs for the gear.

If your budget permits..

Try a custom made machine,
a company called Carillon built a machine for me.

Model AC-1
2.2 GHz P4
512 RD RAM
20 + 60 Hard Drives
Delta 10 10 Sound card.

Does the job for me...

Go for 1Ghz and over, at least 256 Ram, and a 40 Gig harddrive, the rest is up to you.

ok iam running

4.2Ghz

512 Of sd ram (this will run your machine 15% faster) Than DDR ram

180 Gig hard drive

52 Speed Cd burner

DVD Drive

Geforce4 Graffics Card

Extenal Cd Burner (Yamaha)

Sound Blater Audigy Platinum EX

Tekram Scsi Card

Custom Made mother board (this is most important)

Most things in the list are going to really drop in price as new $$$$ will be about so for a badbwoy pc pay just over a grand and that will have all you need

lastset on the market is a 180 gig drive if you got bare change then this mummas about 200

That's an absurdly powerful PC.

All I can say to anyone buying a new one is: don't touch Windows 2000 with a bargepole.

I'm on a 1.6ghz Athlon (1800XP), with 512 RAM, 80 gig drive, M Audio Delta 66.

Dual Processors? You use your PC for games innit. I bet you never opened an production program in your life... IT DONT WORK WITH DUAL PROCESSORS.

The current Spec for a WinPC should be:

DualAthlon 2GHz
512MB RAM
Whatever soundcard you like, but do some research and get one with low ASIO latency number in the 5ms range.
As large a harddrive as you can find, ATA133 minimum

As for software, again, PC speaking:

Windows 2000 or XP
Reason 2.0
CubaseSX (stick with Cubase since Logic has dropped it's PC lineup)

And DFX, you're wrong ... most new PC audio apps are dual processor enabled, and many plug-ins are as well.

That's like the best thing you could buy today. Now, I work on something much less powerful and still can make fairly complex tracks ... so it's really up to you how involved you're going to get with the productions.

Hmmmmmm, if your sure about that. I swear I read Cubase doesnt support Dual Processors, anyway...

What type of RAM do people prefer?

SD Ram, what does that mean.. I gotta have Pentium to use it or what?
