This is one of those "how long is a piece of string" questions.

The SM 58 is a good mic and so is the nuemann m149. One costs £80 and the other £2000.

I wouldn't engrave on a 149 though

I'd fly over to the UK and slap you really hard if you even thought about doing that to a m149.

Icey, if the MC is going to use it out at raves/parties/etc. the Shure is a very roadworthy mic. It can take some abuse and still work well. It's the number one choice of gear-4-fire stores because they are robust and sound good (relatively) and are affordable.

The neumanns on the other hand...you take out insurance on them.

yeah, you could probably get them to engrave either a plate and attach that, or the ring around the spit screen.

the actual body of the mic may be engravable as well...who knows?

Take it in to a jeweler's/ keycutters/engravers/trophymakers and see what they say!

Best of luck!

I wouldn't engrave on the metal, it'll flake away next to the engraving, scratches have a habit of growing on 58/57s. Do it on a plate then use a very strong adhesive to stick it on. Screwing might get into the electronics.

that's true Zed...I have few 57s/58s that have turned near silver because the finish is flakey.

no, that's after years of abuse - live recording, gigging, loans to friends who aren't as careful...you know the deal

You can get your friend a nice case too...that'll keep it safe and sound.

You can probably adhere a plate to the mic with some adhesive type thing.

I'm thinking that a trophy shop may actually be the right place for this kind of thing...
