Default vocal stuff

I am making a vocal-track with my mate... i never before made anything vocal so help me a bit...

If u have some vocals that are not the same tempo or key what do u usually do? How small pieces do u cut the vocals? One phrase or what? What would be the best way to get the vocals in the right key?-use a autotuner plugin or just tune/finetune the pitch in sampler? What FX to add in?

Damn this is all new to me ))

Big up if anyone dears to answer!

TIMING: Try recycle to cut them up into pieces so you can just sort the timing out by playing each sylable one by one.

TUNING: You can use a tuning plug in to change the key or aort out the tuning, but it will make it sound unnatural the more you do it.

In general you can't go for any big changes with vocals because the human ear picks up on any little oddity more easily than with any other sound. If you have to go for big changes in pitch (+/- 3 semitones) or big changes in timing (+/- 5%) then don't bother, it will sound too unnatural.

If the vocals are at the wrong BPM then you will need to "Time Stretch" them. This will enable you to lengthen or shorten the vocal so that it fits the BPM WITHOUT changing the pitch. Programs like Cool edit allow for this to be done easily. Even if you want vocal to be a different pitch its best to do it this way as if you just cut up the phrases then they will still be way out of time. Any changes in pitch can be done after Time Stretching.

Vocals can be cutup or time-stretched to fit the track tempo but as far as pitch shifting to make it in tune with the track would give you unpredictable results. It would be best to tune the track instead to fit the vocals. Not the other way around. That's just my opinion of course... I always believe the vocals makes or breaks a vocal track, so, much care should be taken in consideration for it to work.

if you are doing vocals for the first time my advice is dont be surprised if it comes out $$$$.personally i think vocals are about the hardest thing to do.......well.anyone can make a beat agreed?anyone can make a bass line.but to make a vocal flow well within a track is difficult.as far as the timing you can timestretch them but if you do it too much you wil get that flange sound to it.if you have sound forge you can enter the initial bpm then enter what bpm you wish to make it and it will do it for you.the only downside is that sometimes it will mess up the vocal and kinda cut some bits out.hard to explain but you will see what i mean if you do it especially with drums!!!!!!!!

Down to the details, cut stuff up into syllables if you're trying to get the timing exact...that way, you can play the words like a drum machine if you do it right. That means that you can also do neat things like make the lyrics say different things, add effects on only certain words, stutter things, etc. etc.
