here's a good way to do it...

run a loop of the song and get a program that has a metronome

then try to synch the metronome to the song, by starting it up and letting it run under the aca...then adjust it accordingly and start it again to try to lock it.

There are programs to do this as well, but sometimes they're not as accurate...like using ReCycle to snip a loop and find the BPM is about 90% correct - depends on how accurate your snipping is...

I used Peak...Mac only

Let's see...there is a thread specifically for the LibX vocals here...the original is 103.1 BPM roughly - mine locks quite well...

I think that because it's originally slower and more on the RnB tip, the vocals may have a little play in them tho...also, could be your swing variance in your drum tracks...

one very old fashioned thing that I swear by is a real metronome. I always have a mechanical one handy. it's soo easy just to have one to hand and the more you use one, the more you get to know tempos.

some downloaded accapellas do have spaces cut out so if your trying to find the tempo and it sounds right in places but not in others it may be cause of this.

Zed's right...that's how I learned - playing piano for 25 years has paid off somehow

It actually really helps for DJing.

I find the two things that you need to know off the top of your head are tempo and frequency, if you can pinpoint those quickly, your life is a lot easier

here i go givin a secret away.

i concur with the fat one, recycle is THE tool for finding out the tempo. yes you have to cut out a loop of a tune accurately but if you use peak or wavelab or any other wave editor a lot then this shouldn't be a problem.

what i usually do when doing a remix is get a copy of the original tune that the vocal was from and take the first 4 bars of the song and cut them out as a loop and use that to get the tempo in recycle

sorry, lady-j, nothing but the real thing here. Beleive me it's beautiful, my first mini, got it all the way from new york last week. There is no plug in that can give you the filter of the moog. I just reach over to my patchbay, patch in a signal and instant moog filter on anything. I wouldn't swap my minimoog or arp 2600 for all the plugins and virtual instruments in the world, come to think of it, I've got most of them already.

the 2600 was the one thing I never got which I really wanted...

Anyway, Lady J's technique is the most accurate because you still have the drum beats to accurately clip your loop at. Often human singers (being human) "push" or "pull" tempo in parts to add pressure, etc. to the vocal. but the tempo as a whole is the same tho...but if you clip a pulled part, you'll be off.

The nice thing about the 2600 is that the synth part of it is only half (or even a quater) of what it can do. With the external input you can use it as a filter, envelope generator, ring modulator, frequency modulator, cheesy reverb unit, amplitude modulator, or various other things. Very nice really.
