Just start with decent soundcard, cubase and a midi controller keyboard and a few sample CDs.

You can't go much wrong with that.

Don't piss around with FruityLoops though, its a toy.

for real! i can get better results out of my lame ass computer and fruity loops than most garageists on this forum can get out of their reason, cubase, logic whatever...i'm not saying i'm a fatzed or anything like that, but just use what you want...the program isn't the issue, the tallent is...i'm sure i would still care about garage if everyone who released a white lable did more than jack a beat with no swing and slap a Bad Company wanna be bassline over it and flog it like it's the don dadda....do what you do, just do it well!

I think there's a wider argument here. The same reason you see lots of people who go out and buy lots of equipment all at once not making the most of it.

Generally, you are best to make the most of a limited amount of features untill you move on to add a few more and so on. Then you don't neglect anything as you are forced to use everything you have got to it' full potential.

I started off as a little lad using an atari running notator with a DX-7. I then added an akai so1 sampler, then started splicing tape machine slices, then began using an spx-90 effects unit etc etc and so on. By doing this I am fully competant in everything that I use. If my first introduction to music making had been the studio that I have now, I would probably be sitting here right now twiddling my thumbs making mediocre music on the GM sounds of my XV-3080.

The moral of the story is that you always work best when you work within limits. Don't try and do too much too soon, get the most out of anything before you move on and get something new.

That's true. I bought a Rode NT1 mic along with some other stuff and I've never used it. Not once.

But I WILL... when I build that live room...

Popshields and mic pres are for beginners, if you want tech head I could start going into proximity effects, off-axis rejection, sibilance, air, noise floors, dynamic ranges.............

..........mind you, I've never heard a garage recording that's taken any care about anything like that so I wont!!!!!

I think you're pushing it a bit!!!

"all in one digital audio studio" - well perhaps, but lacking such features as audio / midi recording, decent quality effects, processing, any form of post production, mastering, wavetable synthesis etc etc I could go on...

"synth" - an incredibly limited pseudo analogue affair.

"sampler" - even more limited than the synth.

Beleive me, I agree that it is handy, I actually use it to knock up a loop every once in a while, bujt professional it is not.

Reason is a toy and I'm sure that all you kiddies enjoy playing with it, but don't try and say that it's proffesional.

a toy? if I ever get suttin cut, Ill send it to ur ass.

if reasons a toy then fruity is a dummy/pacifier (us).

u can sit there with ur synths and samplers and tweaking the $$$$ out of em, but can u link me to any tunes (streaming?). they may be sound soundqualitywise, but do they cut it otherwise?

not makin beef. Im jus backing reason cos Ive heard it do mindblowing tings. Its my lovechild.

Its fx are quite poor.
no VST means I need to make VSTi loop in a VST compat. prog and import.
Its not about mastering or even final mixing down in rsn, rsn jus get u the basic tune.

now go suck a lemon hardware bwoy!

Theres a drum'n'bass crew from New Zealand (where I am) by the name of Concorde Dawn. Theyve been making a bit of a name for themselves the past couple of years, their tunes are now getting played by a lot of The Big Names, and theyre getting stuff signed to labels like Timeless etc. What do they use?

Fruityloops.
