Your best bet is either a garage sample CD from the back of a music magazine or sampling straight off records, mp3s etc.

You can also synthesize this kind of stuff...quite easy to do.

or take a sample of something and use envelopes and filters on it until it sounds like something you'd use as a kick or snare or whatever.

I've made great kicks out of squeeze bottles for ketchup, burps, etc.

You need to get some sample editing software or a synthesis program or an honest to goodness real synth.

Then you need to learn what effects and filters and eqs etc. do what to the sound.

Then you need to play around.

Experiment with things and learn through experience. Much much better than me just telling you what to do.

Or go get a sample CD

Imagination is generally a good idea, but if you want to make run of the mill garage, go for the sample CD.

LOL, ag...buy a rhodes

j/k.

You need to learn the ins and outs of your effects and sound mangling programs to really get the most out of a sample.

With one kick sample, you can turn it into a million different ones (not all good, mind you) with a simple filter, some EQ and a gate/compressor.

Same with any real instrument...it just takes knowing what eq freqs affect what, and what to expect from a sound when you add an fx/filter to it...

Knowledge is power...this allows you to translate the sound in your head to real life with a relative degree of speed and precision...the rest is creativity/experimentation.

Then you can push the boundaries and come up with unique sounds. (i.e. sounds beyond the rhodes )

Do remeber one thing though; if you want to mangle a sample again and again, you must start with a sound that is of a high quality. Every time that you mangle a sound, you take away some of it's dynamic range and frequency detail. You can end up sounding a little too lo fi if you do this over the top.

Oh, and try to monitor as loudly as possible on as clean a system as possible...that way, you'll be able to hear/sense all the little artifacts that will contribute to your noisefloor more than they will to your song.

But remember to give your ears a break as well!

nope, some 'sonic grit' is all good. everything in moderation.

But part of it, like I said, is knowing that you're going for grit vs. trying to make a sound and wondering why you get this pop when you compress what you thought was a sonically clean sample.

Lo fi isn't that bad, but more often than not people call their stuff lofi just as an excuse when they can't produce well.

Minimal also falls into the same category quite often.

Try layering your (percussion) samples to get a thicker or more distinctive sound. Combine different types of percussion to make different snares or kicks etc.

Ponky, that's actually a great hint for getting some of the organs/rhodes sounds as well...layering samples or playing mulitple patches with the same notes can lead to some nice harmonics and sonic structures. Great for subtle character changes.

Ask Fatzed about layering basses though...I like to, he doesn't.
