Default sample cd's

As a yankee, w/o much access to the latest and greatest in sample technology, I was wondering which cd's i should buy on import. I know there are people on here who make these cds so what do you recomend? i'm a dedicated fruity user and want something that is mostly .wav files and rippable audio. Also, for recording vocals straight to cooledit, should i just use my soundcard's sound in port (it's a SoundBlaster Live) or should i invest in a pre-amp? mind you, i'm only 16 and currently unemployed, so lets not have you lot recomend a $40000 setup!

cheers
t-man

Let us know what you got to spend before we get lots of "how longs a piece of string" comments.

add a tin can and you've got a mic!

Actually Tigerman, you can get sampleCDs from the states...

check stores like http://www.bigfishaudio.com

I know they have a few UK Garage sample CDs...of course, these are all around the $100 US range...

Shops here in the States carry very limited sample cd's around their store, so the best alternative is the web. Check out www.ilio.com or www.bigfishaudio.com. Or my favorite www.soundsonline.com.

A small Joe Meek preamp, a shure SM 58 mic and spend the rest on sample CDs.

sounds fair there Zed. Joe Meek are great for the price (under $300US), the Shure is a quality mic which is very respected and very robust (though not very expensive - under $100US) - this will really improve the quality of the sound going into the soundcard - and the samples will help you get started without a synth (about $50 - $100 / CD set). 1 sample CD will go a long way.
