Default Recording MCs

How does anyone else here record MCs?

My problem is this: If using a nice mic like a Neumann M149, mounted and pop shielded etc, it will be unnatural for the MC, they will probably move to and fro too much giving level and proximity problems and the mics sensitivity will be far too much for a good recording.

If you give them a handheld, you're going to have to use a pretty lofi mic like an sm58, they will move it in their hand giving boom and bump noise. Plus you'll get sibilance problems from no pop shield and your mic will most likely be covered in spit.

Where is the answer?

from what i understand the latter method is usually the one employed with the caveat that the mc hold the mic a little further away than usual (preventing plosives and sibilance. still... i'm no bloody engineer so wot do i know?

Dan is the Don, but it just shows you that none of us know everything and that everyone has something to learn

I was thinking maybe giving the MC a handheld and also boom micing him/her to get the best of both worlds on 2 tracks or something...dunno if this'd work...

JJ? any ideas?

I think I'll just have to adapt to every different MC.

The well behaved ones get the Neumann!!!!!

I know...let them record on both and hear the difference.

Trust they'll chose the Neumann if they have any ears.

Try to get your hands on an Electovoice RE-20 (used alot in radio) to see if you like it. It sounds great (for a dynamic mic) and is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to distort with the human voice - and there's little sibilance issue. At around $700 a pop, you don't really want any spit...but it's got a small screen and you can always d$$$$ some stockings over it. Back when I did a lot of hip hop, I used it on about every session.

The other trick is to give the MC a SM57 to hold then put up a condenser near them on a figure 8 or omni pattern (eliminating proximity). If you have a "dead" room, you should get good results even if they move around a bit.
