basic 2 step beat:

1 bar is broken up into 16 parts

k x x x x x x x x x k x x x x x
x x x x s x x x x x x x s x x x

there you go

that's the basis of the most simple 2-step beat in the world.

hard to explain...sorry

Got any mates who could help you out?

I kinda understand it from dat...at least i fink...
say u filled dem 'x's' in wif kicks or woteva and u played it bak would it be 16 beats in a row...so basically da beats can be positioned anywhere as long as dey r in da space of 16 beats?:S

Wot bout 4/4?

yeah, close to that

Now, what rigidness like this will get you is a breakish track...after you get the basic pattern down, you need to add some shuffle/swing to it by moving things off the "hard lines" (the exact 16th note beat) which is done by playing with the groove/shuffle/swing factors on your sequencer or by moving things slightly off the 16th by hand.

You may need to unlock Quantization to do this (that's a fancy word for timing templates kinda)

anyway, a 4/4 beat is

k x x x k x x x k x x x k x x x
x x x x s x x x x x x x s x x x

That's a really really boring and basic pattern, but that's why it's easy for people to get...

If you look at the pattern, can you see why it's called 4/4?

The bar is broken up into 4 parts and each down beat is punctuated with a kick drum.

The kick and the snare basically lay down the foundation - they need to be steady and somewhat predictable in order to form a groove...if it's too random, the human brain can't deal with it (and thus, can't dance)
