Default Mics And Vocals

Yo, dint kno where to put this so i figured u lot kno the geeky computer stuff and all that. No dissin. But I gotta mic and wanna hook it up to my laptop and record on there but i need to know a few things so try n help me out here.
Firstly the mic's a dynamic mic, SM58 to b specific, so the impedance is 300Ohms. That mite b important.
I got my cable going to a stereo 6.3mm jack(stereo). Obviously I need it to go to a 3.5mm jack and so i bought a converter, but this was mono to mono. Obviously i need a stereo to stereo, which i've ordered, am i rite so far?
Consequently i'm losing a lot of sound and even shoutin with the volume rite up i cant hear meyself on it. So question is soundcards. I dont kno the impedance for my soundcard but if it helps its a Conexant AMC Audio Soundcard. Apparently if the mics impedance is greater than the soundcard i will lose impedance. I don't think this can be a problem. My soundcard does not have gain control, as i originally thort or i cannot find the gaincontrol settings, is there anyway i can download some sort of patch so i can have gain control on my soundcard?
Thirdly, someone recommended the use of a mixer. I'm a bit apprehensive because 1. I don't understand mixers, 2. They cost a lot of money to get it rong, 3. I don't understand mixers. Can any1 help me to understand mixers and say whether or not a mixer would b a good idea?

what u recording with?

maybe check your settings, like in the properties there should be recordin settins n playback settins. bump up the recording volume on hte channel that youre recording thru. the mic or line in channel. see what that does.

I'd suggest running it through a mixer.

It doesnt have to be nothing fancy, as long as it has seperate bass, mid, treble and gain controls. This way you can control the sound on input and stop things like clipping.

Plug from your mixer to the line in socket and NOT the microphone one. (it dont make sense but thats what you need to do!) You will need a phono to mini jack cable. These are only a few quid.

Try recording through Soundforge. Thats what i use and have no probs at all.

k, that brings me onto my next question, where can i get a cheap mixer? I dont have a huge budget, and although I could probably afford to spend £150 on a decent mixer, I would have to be absolutely sure that it would work without any further problems, or that I could get my money back in full if it didn't.

Btw, yes there is a dancehall artist by the name Lexxus(songs include girls, girls) and i was unaware of this til after i started using the name Lexus, although i was called this for about two years before i started to mc under it. I have thort about changing the spellin, for example Lexis cud be gud, since the meaning is about vocabulary.

You could get quite a decent mixer for that money. Something like this (which is what i use) is only 99 quid and works perfectly...

This is the cable you will need to plug your mixer into your Soundcard...

Ok, i've bookmarked both pages, i have one more idea which is a custom made cable, which if it works will prevent from having to get a mixer just yet, but if it doesn't then its only a fraction of what a mixer'll cost me. Thanks everybody for the advice, appreciate.
