Default MC or no MC

Do you reckon it's better to make tracks with MCs on or with none so that MCs can do it better live. I can get good well known MCs on the tracks , but is it worth it?

well ... that depends. Nothing gets me more than a record that only has the vocal version. is you supposed to tell the MC to stop so you can drop it - or worse if their isn't an MC, does you play it and have the invisible MC phenomenon. I think that most DJs would agree with me - the dub version is key.

that being said, as a producer, you may want the toon to have an MC over it for CD sales, marketability, videos, or simply because you like the sound (which should dictate your decisions at the end of the day anyweah). just make sure that if its released on vinyl that both versions are available for the DJs.

Well, if you want, you can do it on the same track...a version with MC and then the same thing without an MC...an instrumental, so to speak.

If it has vocals you can do this:

vocal mix
vocal + mc mix
+ 2 dub mixes

and you've got a nice 12"

yeah no doubt sen,

but unless you do a double pack (or each version is no longer than 3 1/2 mins) then you'll be sacrificing loudness on the cut.

id go for:

1 side MC+vox+that sample of those random people talking about that you though sounded cool but always knew you shouldn't be using cos its wack+whatever other beat detracting madness you've decided to include.

1 side dub with very select bits of the vocal cut out and used only for the sonix qualities and NOT for any sort of flow or hook or ting.

sometimes agree with pru:

there needs to b less of both kind of these tunes on the scene: the instrumental dubs should be left for breakbeat (and i mean real breakbeat - not this breakstep garabage) and jungle. garage is technicaly a form of house music, so lets get back to the vocals. don't get me wrong, an emcee every now and then is a good thing, but lets not have whole sets of them yeah?

that said, i'll flex anything made by fat zed!

Nahhhh Pru!

I love pure vocal or pure instrumental but MC's have their place. In the UK the music is tightly linked with MC-ing and this goes all the way back to sound system days - there's no way you can take the mic away from the MCs and whether you lkie it or not MCs will be riding your riddims so it's in our interests to make them MC freindly.

I never intended to work with MCs but when you find a really good one (there's a lot of jokers out there) just a few bars of chat on a breakdown can set a track off. Like my MCs on the intros as well.

o.k. you don't know me because you're not so long on this forum I think. Of course I like some MC tunes (esp. Too Wize Crew's 'Slip and Slide' when RB MCing with melody). But I think there are too many MC tunes out that sounding all the same: a bunch of MCs or a single MC rapping over an instrumental that isn't worth the vinyl it's pressed on - the only reason why this tunes are played are the MCs -> musical poor I would say. Give me a really good backing track with a good MC over it and I'll play it all the time.

Just recieved AK47 'Blunts' yesterday and it's just another one of that wannabe-hip-hop-but-then-it-won't-sell-so-we-are-doing-a-garage-track-tune - boring.

also I like to play alongside a MC - but he has to know when to chat and when not otherwise I'll turn down the MIC when he's destroying the music.

Sure Pru, I agree with what you're saying if you're talking about MCs who lack talent but what you said was "the only good MC is a dead one" ????

I lose my patience with radio stations where the MC wont leave the mic alone - sometimes I just want to listen to the music . I try to teach my MCs how to use the mic so that the people can still appreciate the track. As a producer I see it as a challenge to move up a level from the kind of MC tunes Pru mentions. It's early days for this music, see how it develops - it can get better.

it was sarcastic because:

I'm just tired of this MC hype - there are good ones without a doubt but nowadays every tune seems to have a MC on it -> too much. Just remembering when I heard 'I like it' the first time - I was like 'yeah that sounds fresh'. Nowadays I'm more like 'oh no another one'.

But that all just a personal view.

U could compromise and just have a couple lines of rhymes here n there rather than huge chunks + ur vocals.

soz to all that miss understoon my wierdo rants about mcs and garage - ur right pru, i guess i missunderstood you because i'm not on here much, but i agree w/what your sayin. one of my fav tunes of all time is the full vocal mix of Oh No (pop or not that was still heavy as hell) but all this emcee on bad tracks garabage needs to go!
