Default how do recording Contracts etc work????

Once u get a recording contract which states how many albums ur contracted for etc, do they tell u when the require the album to be finished by? And do they give u time-off(holiday leave) in the contract to get a way from the music etc? And then do they tell u when the want the 2nd album completed by etc?

Also, how soon after a retail store SELLS an artists CD does it take for the ARtist to receive the royalties from that CD? Does it go straight into the artist's bank account or does it go to the artists record company then to the artist? anyone how long?

Most album deals are done on a quanity basis, often with a set period of time. For example 5 album over 20 years.

Often when an artist wants to get out of their deal, but are still contracted to say another album, you'll see them release 'Greatest Hits' - this is a classic way for a artist to fulfill his contact without delivering another original album.

Regarding how long it takes for royalties to come through - it really depends but normally at least 6 months minimum - often alot longer.

So how is an artist supposed to survie financially for 6 months while they wait for their royalties? does the record company give them money? if so, how much money? And does the record company have deadlines as to when an album has to be finished by, by giving them a schedule etc? And do the artists make a schedule as to when they will go on holiday?

During the time whilst waiting for royalties, the artists will usually go on tour, and all that jazz, which tides them over. Artists don't just recieve money solely from record sales.

SOMETIMES, but progressively rarer these days, an artist could recieve an advance, but they are not all that common anymore. You'd need to be something definately special and have a deal of hype around you. To use a $$$$ artist for example, the hype around 50 Cent's debut would have been enough to enable Aftermath to negotiate an advance for the album.

Holiday's tend to be done on a 'when you're finished' basis. After the release of an album, is a good time, then back in 2 weeks for further promo and crap.
