home computer recording

Hello,
i am new to this site and to recording. can anyone give me some advice on what equipment i need to start a home recording setup on my lap top, and also how to connect it up?

at the moment i have garage band on my mac and an internal sound card and a condenser mic.

do i need a better external soundcard and if so how does this connect to the computer and mic?

You will need a soundcard to connect your Mic to if you don't have a mixing desk or Mic Preamp. A soundcard will have to be connected via USB or Firewire if you have a laptop/ iMac (will also work with MacPro or G4/5). If you have G4/5 or MacPro you may be able to use PCI or PCI Express (this gets more complicated though). The soundcard must have at least one XLR connection and Phantom power.
