Default hmmm choices, edirol fa101, multimix,xenyx ?

Im gonna start recording at home soon as ive recently got into it from doing music technology at school and wondered what the most cost effective way for pound for sound to record would be. Im not loaded so these are some things ive seen that look reasonable.
ill be recording everything seperately but i need atleast 4 inputs for doing drums with seperate tracks. although i preferably want 8 to record live music.

Ive heard that the alesis multimix 16 is a good way to go as its pretty simple to use and has seperate tracks going through firewire.
this is the one that im thinking of probably getting as it has 10 ins/outs, 192khz, ive used this at college and sounds pretty sweet, although it only has 2 pre amps.

the new range of behringer xenyxs look pretty good although ive not seen many reviews, but then im guessing i'd still need an audio interface.

what other good options are there, ive heard that just getting an awesome pre-amp is good but they seem a bit pricey. Opinions please???

Hey man... I have the edirol and its fine for recording single tracks, but the monitoring system is a pain in the ass. The only way you can turn down the record monitor is to turn the output monitor up full, and can be real awkward. You can also only use two condenser mics at the same time if you are recording say, a full drum kit - which is fine if you dont wanna decent mic sound on the snare..... one massive tip - use Drummagog, its an amazing drum trigger plug-in, as you can load your own samples into the plugin itself, and over as many channels as you want. Great for cubase!! I am getting one of those mixer soundcards soon as I think they offer more options (as long as you can get phantom power on all channels) and you can use outboard equipment with the better ones. Just spend as much as you can on it, then a bit more!!
Hope this helps!...

Cheers, Owen
P.S. Checkout what I did in my front room thru that same Edirol box in a week.. www.myspace.com/sanguineband
