Theres quite a lot of samples available via Akai Japans (slow) ftp:
ftp://ftp.akaipro.co.jp/downloads/sound_libraries/

The zips have Akai files for the relevant samplers, but the sounds themselves are wav format. Its all pretty clean souding stuff.

There's a site called sonomic.com which has bare samples, but you got to pay for them.

People don't tend to give away good samples for free as they take time and effort to make. You don't find car manufactureres giving away cars do you.

This is why you tend to buy sample CDs. However I don't think that it's technically illegal to sample anything (CDs, vinyl) or borrow sample CDs as long as you don't release or make money from the end product.

So if you're just plying around, sample anything.

Adding to what Fat Zed said... use your decks:

Listen carefully to your vinyl, find a kick (or chord, or snare, or hihat, or whatever) thats seperated from the rest of the tune that you like... record.

It's a time consuming but rewarding business.

If you have any sound editing software, you can record a pretty complex break or pattern and then cut up the parts that you want to use...isolate them etc.

Something like ReCycle is particularly helpful with beats and such.
