Make your own lazy.....

......go to http://www.samplecity.net and get some individual hits (snares, kikz, hatz etc.) then make up your own

if your not bothered about what you want it 2 sound like, get fruity loops - its $$$$ and i hate it - but if you just want 2 make the beat (using ukg samples, not the fruity loops samples) its fine i guess. if you want 2 do more, but not serious production you need reason - retails for about 225 pounds (no symbol on this computer!! Grrr), and if you got a midi controller (not neccassary but useful) you can make half decent tunes... if youve got a few spare grand you might 2 invest in a synth, sampler and a wicked sound card and make tunes on a more serious scale.

Reason is also not as 'un-serious' as people may make it out to be...

Sure, protools kicks it's ass sonically, but can protools run without a DSP farm? Can you even synthesize in protools? hah, protool's own midi sequencer isn't much better than Reason's if you compare them. Moreover, how much do you need to spend to get a protools rig up and running?

Sure Logic is a much deeper sequencer, but can you synthesize sounds, use a drum machine grid interface, have a softsampler without buying/warezing other plugins?... again, there's the cost factor.

Reason is a great scratch pad to start writing tunes, to get ideas in, and to get sounds out.

Reason has it's place - totally.

I use nothing but protools. Yeah, it's not for the beginner but I don't think anything touches it for quality. The effects are so much better quality than on anything else. I tried recording the same sound through Waves truverb in several environments. TDM was excellent, rtas was pretty good but the vst version was nowhere near the quality.VST mixing degrades the signal too much also because it doesn't reserve enough floating point power.

You can use synths in protools. I've got virus and I can run 15 8 voice polyphonic versions on my mix3 system. Also I reckon that soft sample cell is the best software sampler by a long way.

According to just about everybody in the music production biz
the only advantage over cubase and logic that tools has are the rock solid timing issuues..........
also alot of people using tools at the mo, do so cos it was the industry standard and an understanding was in the past essential
but not so much now..
dont get me wrong i am a great believer in pro-tools and would never knock it (only the price hehe)but its far less important then it used to be I feel..........

I concur tupid:

tons of people I know who had protools rigs and invested tons of money back in the day are using them now because they still work and are still holding court. However, if they didn't have them to begin with, I know many of them who would choose something else if only to save some cash

or HALion - stick EXS24 into logic, HALion into Cubase and you've got yourself a nice softsampler.

There's also a new Native Instruments VSTi drum machine, but I can't remember the name - supposed to be bombass!

if fruity accepts midi, there's no reason why it wouldn't

all depends what Fruity accepts and how it accepts it
