Well back in da day around 95, he made 'Super Sharp Shooter' with an Akai sampler and Atari ST, so by now he must have bought loads of equipment, or not.

He uses a Reason sample in one of them. Give me a few days and ill find out what tune and what sample he uses!

Maybe he's tried everything?

A little bit of both, really.

Knowledge is power, but all the technical knowledge in the world isn't going to help you if you don't have any creativity. And vice versa - you could be really creative, but if ytou don't have any technical skills, it'll never get fully realized.

We've talked before about the difference between technical skills and musicality.

You need to know what you want something to sound like (creativity) and then you need to know how to get your synths/samples/fx whatever to sound like what's in your head.

The translation from head to harddisk is the tough part.

I can sing the tunes, know what I want the song to sound like, but spend hours getting the synth patches just right.

The best advice to get good - is to keep doing it, to experiment, to push yourself and your software/hardware to do things it may never have been meant to do.

Get to know music theory, get to know the vocabulary of the genre/music so that you can talk to other producers and engineers and know which EQ freq to boost when I say:

"That kick drum needs some more presence"

etc. etc.

it takes a lot of time and a lot of effort - it just doesn't happen over night.

Oh, and knowing how to sing/play an instrument/read music helps a ton.
