cool edit/ soundcard/ general me being an idiot help please

hi everyone, im andy, im new. hello.

right heres the dilema -

ive got this new shiny laptop, cool edit on it, and im looking to record some tunage. i have my behringher PA setup in the room, mic's into lines 1-8, cd player into 10, ipod into 11, speakon cables to the speakers, all hunky dory, no mad noises, all working fine. however, ive got stereo 1/4" cable going out of my left and right main sockets and into the inbuilt laptop sound card line in/ mic. again, no real problems there, but when i go to record i get the sound fine, when i play back i get a mad interference type sound, oh wise ukmusic forum, why is this, can it be that the soudcard's $$$$, the desk's buggered or something else more sinister alltogether

help, i beg of you, it's grinding my gears.
