It's pop-tastic. It's down with the kids. Easy peasy to listen to. General appeal to a mainstream audience.

I agree with Helen - you get the good with the bad as you do with all music genres. Pop has the accossiation as being for teeny boppers - more of a pre-teen auudience and is seen as many to be uncool.

But how is Madonna uncool? She is the queen of pop!

I just don't get how anyone can be so dismissive of an entire genre of music. Yes there are some mediocre pop acts, but there's no way you're going to convince me the likes of Madge, Gorillaz don't have any good tunes under their belts, and you can't tell me that the likes of Will Young, Christina Aguilera, Kelly Clarkson etc aren't talented.

If your gonna generalise pop music as a whole, you would also be talking about some of these cheesy r'nb songs coming from america! Which I know alot of this forum like to listen to quite often. The thing is when people listen to certain tacky r'nb tunes which can clearly be distinguished as pop, they're quick to deny it.....they need to stop living in denial....

But to be honest the old pop music sh!t was tha sh!t!!! (Listen to some of the stuff from before we was all born) they got so much character compared to the people doing it now you cant help but to bust a move every now and again .....

Crazy Frog was a music ringtone that crossed over into the UK Charts. It's was the first time that has happenend and will hopefully be the last! I think it only worked as it was novelty. Same as when Mr. Blobby got to number one!

Hang the frog !!!

That doesn't escape the fact that there are some classic pop songs though. You know the kind from back in the day that you can't help but sing along to. Come on, you know I'm right... find the teeny bopper in you!

pop is sh1te. Its popular because the way its marketed and ppl fall for it and buy bob the builder and make it christmas number one. Who cares about boring chart boring music. The best is all underground. Mixtapes , pirate radio stations and sidewinder packs; thats all we need in life

with all due respect your all talkin $$$$! pop is short for popular. what is classed as popular-following from the crazy frog conversation earlier in the thread (i'm not defending the frog...hang the annoying little $$$$$$$)-is the songs that are selling more copies than anything else at the moment. that would make the current number 1-nasty girl-pop music. this will be displaced by the arctic monkeys this afternoon as well. both the monkeys and notorious aren't $$$$e yet your all sittin on this thread saying that all pop music is $$$$e.

bottom line is that pop music isn't a defined genre of music it is the umbrella term for all the different sub-genres that have occurred over the years rnb, hiphop, rock n roll etc etc.

well if you read our posts you would see that we have identified that pop is popular music.

only in the last few years has it become attached to hip hop and RnB. I got a feeling that more people recognise 50cent now than people did 2pac and Biggie when they were in there hey day. My grandma probably knows 50cent

Also most Urban music that goes in chart is waste, watered down music anyway. C'mon "I'll take you to the candy shop, lick a lollipop" and you got mr. Diddy Pop remixing, re-releasing, remastering everybodies music. Chart is wack, its all about mixtapes not albums.

i agree that ppl like biggie and 2pac in their peak didnt receive the same recognition over here that ppl with the half the talent-such as 'fiddy'-do now however good rap/hiphop/rnb artists such as ludacris, usher and john legend for example get the recognition they deserve over here.

Its also not just about rnb/hiphop its about all genres of music. the trend in musical taste has changed for the better in the past 3years or so. you look at the top ten singles/albums now and the quality of artists and music has improved dramatically. this is linked to the increase in ppl wanting to hear live music-e.g. going festivals/gigs etc.
we now have artists with real talent dominating the 'pop' charts rather than boy/girl bands created based on the fact they've got nice hair or big tits rather than actually being able to write good lyrics and play good music.
