Pop music has really declined in recent years. Is pop going out of fashion?

Have you noticed that pop music has really declined over the last couple of years? I am not talking about the quality of music, but the number of pop acts. We used to have the Spice Girls, Busted, Take That, East 17... the list goes on...

Is pop dead? What do you think and how is this affecting the music industry?

Pop is dying because its artificial alot of pop groups are formed through record companies ,and alot of them times the chemistry just isn't right and they split up .Where as other music industries e.g hip hop and rock are in my opinion more real and less artifical and they rap and speak about real everyday topics wich alot of time pop does not do, so i think alot of people apreciate this kind of music (rap,rock) and not pop.

From an American perspective, pop's in no considerable way dead, it just consistently reinvents itself or merges into other genres such as punk (remember REAL punk? Ramones anyone?) , alternative rock ( too many examples to list), industrial ( unfortunately im refering to some of the new NIN tracks) and of course the rap version of pop that which being ..jualah..hip hop.
Aslong as people continue to fall in love, get bitter over breakups and/or need something to sing-a-long to thats not too serious and that wont span beyond two minutes , than pop will continue to thrive.

It depends what you define pop as
If you mean cheesy bubble gum pop then yes that is more or less dead!

But popular music evolves with time and alot of pop listeners are investing into alot of american rnb, does this mean rnb is turning into the new pop??

Alot of manufactured groups etc are all now trying to take on a more "urban" look to keep up with time.....

Do you think that the popularity of reality tv shows such as pop idol and fame academy have had a negative or positive affect on pop music?

Well I think it has a negative and a positive effect but the positive effect is mostly for the people involved (producers ,simon cowell,contestants etc )and dosen't help pop as a whole it makes pop look more artificial and generaly gives it a bad image.

pop is dead in a way, no original artists anymore, all the actors are still acting, still having their songs and lyrics wrote for them

Having song writers write songs for artists is nothing new. It's a tradition that stretches back since the dawn of time, as is the 'manufacturing' of pop stars. What I'm bothered about is the fact that X Factor, Pop Idol etc works better as entertainment TV than as a platform for genuine talent.

I wouldn't say song writing is a problem as there is alot of song writing for artists in the hip hop industry although you dont realy see alot of artists that write their own music the only pop artists that come to my mind when i think about pop artists that write their own music are those bedingfields and jordan.

I personally think if a song SOUNDS good then Its good.

Doesnt matter whos written it or produced it or if the artist hasnt done all that thierself.

I mean some singers or whatver have good voices but maybe they aint got the skills to write the songs, hence u need someone else who does to do this. Its all part of a production thing, teamwork/ working together.


Theres no point cussin artists for not writing their own material, people who do that are swag, just accept a song for what it is, a song, music and or vocals, sounds whatever man its just music, people get too picky now days!

Yeah but then wouldn't you apreciate an artist that wrote or produced an artist more than an artist that just got the music and the words and sang them.and then theres lip syncers alot of them in pop.

Hmm I see where your comming from and yeah lip syyncing is bull. I mean if yor in the business cos of your tallent then wtf is up with lip syncing.

I think the problem with Pop per se, is that it is manufactured music created to be force fed to the mindless prepubescents who will happily exchange their pocket money for the latest CD of inane, talentless poop! Those prepubescents then grow into adults and form their own opinions, likes and dislikes, then move off into other forms of music. The same goes for the aforementioned Popsters as well, the inane talentless actors get left by the wayside, whilst those that have some talent, mature and start issuing respectable tunes!

pop is certainly not dead IMO. to me, pop is mass marketed comercialised music there is certainly no shortage of that at the moment. to me the line between pop, punk, hip hop etc. is growing ever finer in the commercial industry.

maybe i'm wrong.

the music industry, as we all know, is a little worse for ware at the moment though - the internet is doing it no favours at all. so in that sense pop is 'ill', but not dead :P - itunes and others is seeing to that

i'm glad for the internet though. if it means larger record companies die out and pop as a commercialised product dies - everyone is on a level playing feild, able to share their music over the internet.

writing songs for the love of music and not for profit can surely only be a good thing... ?

There still McFly, Westlife, Girls Aloud, Robbie Williams, Joss Stone, the Bedingfields etc.

well i dnt think tht pop has died look at all the bands comin back to form lol such as that one on mtv that was rubsih it think its cummin bck to life and we still have girls aloud but i tink they will split up soon
