| To be honest Stylus, I'm not feelin' your scratching much...probably because it's over DnB, which is like scratching at half speed - that is not to say that it's not good for the genre, but I personally find scratching over UK Garage and breaks harder, because at half speed it sounds $$$$, so you're almost forced to scratch at full speed.
Anyway, pop up one over UKG and if it's as clean and well timed, then that'd be much more impressive in my books....
(p.s. I can't scratch worth $$$$, so this is all just an ear-pinion) |

| I would say Garage is definately harder to scratch to.
If you scratched to garage using the same rytham as you did to D n B then it would be ridiculously slow. So when scratching to garage as opposed to D n B you have to almost scratch twice as quick. But it would be impossible to scratch to D n B using the rytham you would use to garage as it would be to fast.
So you basically need 2 different sets of moves for both types of music.
I have always wondered if MC's have the same sort of situation as I should imagine lyrics for garage will not fit over d n b etc.
Sorry to barge into your conversation, but I though I would just give my views. |

| @ Sen Sen remember we had that thread about scratching a while ago, and we were talking about what hand you use for scratching and what hand you use for the cross fader.
Well, I was whith this guy the other day who was right handed and he used his right hand for the fader. (this is the way if I remeber rightly you said it should be done). I found overall his scratching very slow as opposed to someone who would use there right hand for the record and their left for the fader (if they were right handed).
This probably sounds very confusing, but what I am getting at is if you are right handed and use your right hand for the fader, this will chop the sound up more but, if you used your right hand for the record you will be able to move the sound quicker forward and backward.
Therefore if you are right handed and use your right for the record and your left for the fader you will be able to get a lot more of a quicker scratch rytham going.
Just thought I would add that point in. |

| @ Kreff,
the push and pulling of scratching is not supposed to be done all that quickly really...it's supposed to be controlled for most of the more complex patterns.
The real speed, power, and control is needed to move the crossfader quickly and accuately.
In all honesty though, do what feels good for you.
I just recommend doing it with dominant hand on fader as that's how I was taught by hiphop headz who are wikkid scratchers. Plus, if you ever want to learn the complex scratches, I defy you to do it with your non-dominant hand on the fader.
I would like to be a) good at scratching and b) ambidextrous, because I feel all goofy with my arm across my body if I'm scratching off of the right table. |

| I just feel moving the record with your donkey hand foward and back you can get no real rytham going. With the other hand you can really pull some moves off.
Suppose it is an arguement that could go on for ever. |

| Scratching is gay
Sounds good when you are laying beats for an hip hop MC
That's about it.
And shouldn't you be able to scratch using both hands just as well as each other?
That's what they do on all the DMC videos I've watched? |

| Yeah, Logan, the really good scratchers can. But most aren't as proficient as that.
Scratching has it's place. I don't think it's totally out of place over Garage or DnB in limited doses. But you're right...it's true home is in HipHop |

| I'd have to disagree scratchin is all about skill and entertainment ... straight mixing is boring man and you gotta hype up the set once in a while. Every one respects a well rounded dj especially the ladies.
