Default Music downloads will be free in a few years.

That's a fact. Actually, it already works. There are many things going on these days in the music business. The most important in my opinion is that there is a growth of the sites on the Internet which pays to their artists from the ad revenue. Whether for streaming or even for downloading songs. So fans get the music for free and the artist gets payed. I believe this is the future of the Internet music.
Let's face it: it is possible to download every song on the Internet by saving it from the computers cache, recording the live stream or just using any P2P. Be it legal or not but it's possible. If a product is digital it can be copied and it will be. It is an impotent effort of the majors to fight the "piracy".
So, the future is: An embeddable player which shows ads, plays music and pays to the artists. No need for a music lover to own a credit card.

YEAH I AGREE TOTALLY. I THINK IT'S GREAT FOR THE MUSIC INDUSTRY BECAUSE IT WILL PUT ALL MUSICIANS ON THE SAME LEVEL. IT WILL ELIMINATE THE NEED FOR MAJOR RECORD LABELS CORRUPTING WHAT THE INDUSTRY IS ALL ABOUT - THE MUSIC! IT HAS WORKED WELL FOR THE LIKES OF RADIOHEAD AND MEANS THAT NEW UNSIGNED ACT LIKE MYSELF HAVE MORE OF A CHANCE! MY GROUP HAVE UPLOADED OUR FIRST ALBUM FOR DOWNLOAD FREE ON OUR SITE AND HAVE FOUND IT A GREAT WAY TO GET FEEDBACK AND IT'S A LOT MORE ENJOYABLE BECAUSE YOUR MUSIC IS AVAILABLE TO EVERYONE!

I hope it does work out like that but theres a problem. It worked for Radiohead because they're an established act but if you are allowing people to have all of your music for free there's the danger that it will be perceived as worthless. I don't think like that, the more free music the better, but you know when a product is priced cheaply in a shop the common reaction is to ask what's wrong with it. People love downloading illegaly because it's getting something for free that they would other wise have to pay for. So it's looked at as saving money. I just think it's going to be even harder to build bands up without selling anything but i hope it won't be.

Default Free download is not so easy

CalumMac, unfortunately your point is true. Lack of the advertisers is also a problem as there is more advertising space on the Internet than the advertisers. Tunesquare temporarily put an end to that business model too. Many sites request to join them as users and that scares people off. If I can't click it without registering I won't click it as it's annoying to register as a user on hundreds of sites.

But something must be done to put things in a balance. Now majors want to charge the ISPs. But how will the monies be divided between the copyright owners? And not everybody download the music from the Internet (deaf people who work over the Internet?) Why should those people pay the additional charge?

Anyway, it's a very exciting time we are living these days.
