BLURB:
Production London Presents another eclectic feast of music, film and pure fun at the 3rd excursion to SCALA in Kings Cross London. This time they bring -
GILLES PETERSON - This man doesn't really need any introduction however - Gilles Peterson is known for his eclectic musical selections, and has even been occasionally mentioned as the new John Peel. Like the late John Peel and his "anything goes" range of tastes displayed on his show. You can hear him playing anything from dub and reggae through jazz, nu-jazz, funk, soul, neo soul, quality R&B to drum and bass, house, broken beat, hip-hop, Jazz-funk, latin, bossa nova, samba and beyond. CONGO FAITH HEALERS - The Congo Faith Healers are like nothing you have heard or experienced before. Combining gravel throated vocals with down and dirty grooves, they are currently blazing a trail across the land with their intense and utterly compelling live shows. CFH are that truly unique beast; a band that blend their collective influences to create something totally fresh and exhilarating. With a drummer hailing from the Congo, double bass from Croatia, guitarist from Paris and singer/songwriter a wandering poet from some undisclosed continent the band are as culturally diverse as the music they make. Word is being spread from packed show to packed show that the CFH are an unstoppable musical force. VIZION CITY- Vizion City are an electrifying pop/funk/rock band from London who are emerging as one of the premiere live acts in the UK. Drawing Inspiration and influences from reggae, funk, hip-hop and pop music has resulted in their unique sound. BIG TRAINS HAYMAKER - ‘Ridiculous brilliance’ was the verdict on Big Train’s Haymaker after their London debut at The Spitz, and no-one since has disagreed. Is it the crazy instrumental virtuosity? Could be. Is it the outfits? That’s more than a little bit of it for sure. But mostly, it’s about the funk. Loud, danceable, 4-piece rhythm, 3- piece horn, funk. (And then there’s the famous Big Train vocals.) Think Meters, James Brown, P-Funk, Sly and the Family Stone. In fact, with a horn section which recently supported the Family, you could probably ask Sly himself.
The band has wowed crowds wherever they’ve been, tearing the roof off London’s coolest venues, 93 Feet East and The Spitz, keeping the crowds dancing at Summer festivals, and leaving DJs struggling to follow them at clubs everywhere. The radio likes them too. Individually, the members have taken their wares to Glastonbury, Symphony Hall, The Royal Albert Hall, Cargo, the Jazz Café…the list goes on.
JAMES SEVERY CIRCUS CIRCUS - James Severy at the Circus-Circus plays a unique blend of wonky folk paired with dubstep and grime influenced beats. His debut single, Do The Circus Circus, was released by Art Goes Pop and was backed by Zane Lowe, John Kennedy and Huw Stephens - who invited James to record a Maida Vale session for Radio One.
Vicious Times, the debut album from James Severy at the Circus-Circus, is expected later this year. ISAAC HOWLETT BAND - the Isaac Howlett Band have rapidly gained notoriety among audiences on the London live circuit for their unique sound and captivating presence. Setting themselves firmly aside from the rest of the pack, singer/songwriter Isaac (vocals/guitar) and his talented band (ex-Paul Weller bassist Dave Foster and drummer Jon Brooker) rarely fail to impress with their unique, no-nonsense acoustic rock. AYU OKAKITA: After recording 2 albums with Universal Music Japan, Ayu set up a band called Pablonik, for which she also released a record. Then, she issued 2 acoustic, solo albums from Oasis. Hoping to explore more and make new music, Miss Okakita stepped into in London in 2005. She founded a band called Echovelle (www.myspace.com/echovelle), which split up last year. Recenly she's been collaborating with Marc Teitler, theatre and film music composer (www.myspace.com/marcteitler), but mainly has been working on her own, solo material, which we all hope is gonna be released quite soon. To record, she plays all the instruments and adjusts the program beats herself (this she says "makes her mad sometimes"). Thankfully though, her engineer friend, Shuta comes to rescue just on time to give a hand for a better overall quality. To perform, Ayu uses loop stations and if lucky, some friendly audience participation. These give her a great company to truly expose the complexity and beauty of her work.
