Default Women's Music Course

BTWSC ONE-DAY MUSIC BUSINESS OVERVIEW COURSE

FOR WOMEN IN MARCH 2003 (4 BOROUGHS)

It is a fact that there is under-representation of women, and black and ethnic minorities, in the side of the music industry, such as managers, publishers, record company executives, etc.

As part of celebrating International Women’s Month, BTWSC, a pan-London voluntary organisation that develops human potential through the use of the creative arts, is running free, one-day music business overview courses aimed at all women aged 19 years and above, irrespective of social or racial background, employment status, and music industry experience. Courses take place 11am-5pm, except *Forest Gate 2-6pm

(Thursday March 6): Theorem Music Complex (Ground Floor, Cafeteria), 385 High Road, WILLESDEN, London NW10.Tel: 020 8451 4545 (Near Willesden Bus Garage, Dollis Hill tube, next to the London Apollo Club).

(Thursday March 13): Haringey Haringey Arts Council (1st Floor, The Mango Room), The Chocolate Factory, Clarendon Road, WOOD GREEN, London N22 (10 minutes from Wood Green tube station).

*(Wednesday March 19): Durning Hall Community Centre (1st Floor, Hostel Lounge), Earlham Grove, FOREST GATE, London E7. Tel: 020 8555 0142 (2 minutes from Forest Gate station)

(Thursday March 27): Oval House Theatre (Downstairs, Dance Studio), 52-54 Kennington Oval, OVAL, London SE1. Tel: 020 7582 0080 (2 minutes from Oval tube station).

The course is taught by music business tutors who have experience running music business courses, from basic, non-qualification level, right up to graduate and post-graduate level at institutions such as City University, University of Westminster and Haringey Arts Council.

Although it’s an overview course, participants will get a good understanding of how the music business works by examining the role of the key collection agencies, managers, music publishers, record companies, agents, promoters, the media, pertinent points about contracts, copyright, marketing, and a summary of the state of the British music business, with added emphasis on black music. Unfortunately this is not a funded project, hence there is no provision for crèche or transport allowance.

Participants can also take part in the BTWSC co-sponsored Black Music Congress debate/workshop ‘Black Music & Women: what about image & control?’ on Saturday March 29, 3-6pm (registration from 2.30pm) at Theatre U215, City University, Northampton Square, London EC1 (Angel or Barbican tube station. It’s £Free, but it is advisable to pre-book by emailing: editor@britishblackmusic.com.

Booking is on a first come first served basis. For further information on the courses,

phone 020 8450 5987 or email btwsc@hotmail.com. Please specify class venue.
