Default Why do people never seem to sing current music on karaoke????

I go to karaokes a lot, and I've noticed that people never seem to sing much current music, which I find strange because the songs are very popular as songs????

Before you say it's because fo the age of person that sings karaoke, quite a lot of young people who like also do it, and they never sing current chart songs despite it being their preferred choice of music. Very strange????

isnt that often to do with the selection of karaoke songs the DJ has.... alot of karaoke discs are everso slightly different to the original song in order to circumvent certain aspects of copyright laws... theres also the DJ/venue having to pay PRS license's which si a factor in what music they can and cant play... theres a multitude of reasons that could be a possibility,,, the main one will be the DJ sleection of songs which he will likely mkae to feature the more popular "karaoke" songs whice are played week in week out (think time fo your life from dirty dancing.... my way frank sinatra....)

No it's nothing to do with that. Most karaoke jockeys have quite up to date stuff in their books now, as recent as say Rihanna - We Found Love etc.

But when young people sing on karaoke, they never seem to pick the up to date stuff - which is weird because I'd have thought modern music like Pixie Lott, Rihanna etc. was the type of thing they were all really into, so why don't they seem to sing that type of stuff on karaoke?????

Why though, is it more fun when you're singing the oldies??? That's what I don't understand, what makes it more fun to sing the oldies than the hits on karaoke???

I especially can't understand why 18-25 y/o karaoke singers don't seem to find it fun singing, say a Pixie Lott song despite the fact it's the music they prefer listening to than the oldies.

PS: Did anyone spot my typing error earlier "young people who like also do it"???? That doesn't make sense does it. I must have been thinking of Moves Like Jagger, All About Tonight and Mama Do!

It might be that most participants in karaoke are older and therefore choose older tunes? AKA the "why do only old people eat werther's originals?" question.

But when younger people, i.e 18-25 year olds sing karaoke, they also only choose older tunes. Despite that being an age group i expected would be into Pixie Lott and stuff like that.

I found at a pub/club in my area that the younger punters generally do choose more recent stuff. Usually ballad type songs from around the early to mid 2000s . I think you definitely a point that there is a certain nostalgic link with karaoke singing though.

Strongly disagree there, alphonic. Most young people still choose the oldies as far as I've heard!!!!

Although where I do agree is that when someone does choose to sing something recent it is usually a ballad e.g Adele, Buble rather than something upbeat such as Pixie, Rihanna or Example.

And the early to mid 2000s isn't really current anymore in any case.

Takes time to be comfortable with the words.

I think Karaoke is mainly about nostalgia really, and it's a lot easier, considering, in general you're absolutely smashed, to sing a song which is deep rooted in you and you've known the words for a long time that 8 pints of guiness won't matter
