But instead of slating these people, why not try understand it a little? I do think gang warfare is wrong but there has to be a reason right? Surely nobody would continue to do this if they could end it all?

The reason why people get into gangs is because it's an easier way of getting money and power. If you are in a gang, you have a whole team behind you to watch your back. That's why the allure is so strong to join a gang. It's also why kids from broken or abusive families populate these gangs as it gives them a surrogate family and a sense of belonging.
Gangs won't stop because they are recruiting members at an earlier age than in the past. Show a kid whose making a tenner a week on a paper round £100 quid, and just watch their heads turn. If they sell crack or carry guns for the older members they can earn a lot more money than any peer their age who are getting pocket money or working. I was watching a programme on tv the other night, and the police in Manchester are finding kids as young as 9 carrying guns and drugs for older gangsters. For every gangster who leaves, get's killed or sent down, they'll be plenty more youngsters willing to fill the gap. As long as kids carry on being out of control in this country there will be gangs. The only way to stop gangs is to make them less attractive for people to join. The governments saying they are handing out mandatory 5 year sentences for anyone from the age of 18 upwards caught in possession of a gun. I say double it, and bring the age down to 12. If kids of that age can be put away for murder or attempted murder for longer than 5 years, then why can't it be the same for gun possession? The purpose of a gun is to kill, so surely this is the intention of those carrying one. There is no justification for carrying a gun at all. If you bring in tougher sentences for crimes relating to gang activity, then that will decrease the attractiveness of joining one.
I reckon we should just do what New York did, zero tolerance. People will soon stop commiting crime if they're gonna get put in jail, rather than getting an ASBO, a fine or a caution.
Sorry this turned into a bit of a rant, but this is one of the reasons I'm gonna move abroad. Britain's going down the s'hitter, big time!!!!
