Thread: Is UK Garage dying
- 04-08-2002 12:35 AM #1
Is UK Garage dying Theres so much talk that it is and all i get asked for these days is for more dnb. Garage is being pushed further underground which is good news as it filters out the fakas but is support for ukg droppin. Ive heard a lot of talk that all garage sounds the same which i know is bull as it has so so so many influences. And these people ignorant to the diversity of garage have started becomin dnb enthusiasts or even goths.
Wots with that???????

Its gettin pushed out of many venues cos of the attitude associated wiv it. At least thats what has happened in my area. Thats why the interest is generally dying.
Also I personally think that the commercial garage has died out leaving the underground and more "hardcore" sounds about. This is good for real garage fans but means it sells less and is therefore played less. Tunes like "I gotta get thru this", "Do u really like it", "21 Seconds" were really popular cos they were so commercial. Tunes like "Urban Heroes", "hit em wiv a high", "True", etc have a much harder sound.

I get asked to play RnB and Drum N bass all the time now. I think some DJ's have left the new generation of ravers confussed, and not knowing what they want.
Six months or so ago when DJ's were dropping all sorts of tunes in UK Garage sets has kind of messed things up a bit.
I think this is a good thing thats happening to Garage at the moment. All the ravers (and DJ's) who THOUGHT they like Garage music, didn't really, and they will jump on to newer bandwagon's like RnB, Funky House and DnB.
That will leave the real lovers of the music to get on and do their thing, and nights in clubs wont sound like the national top 40 chart showcase anymore.
There are plenty of good new UKG tunes coming out now, so no, I don't think it's dying at all. But there aren't so many ravers as there used to be supporting the music, which is a shame. It's the MC based tunes which mucked this scene up, and where are they and the likes of SO solid now? ......Making Hip Hop!
The only bad thing, is that I may lose my 3 year residency at storm if I don't keep up with the huge requests of RnB tunes.Shine 87.9 fm every Monday 8-10pm

Iam sticking with it, there is good material about; it's a matter of looking for it, but 60% of the tunes being released ain't got the right vibe.

Sparks, how can you say: " Tunes like "I gotta get thru this", "Do u really like it", "21 Seconds" were really popular cos they were so commercial. Tunes like "Urban Heroes", "hit em wiv a high", "True", etc have a much harder sound.
I don't know about 21 secs but "I gotta get thru this" and "Do u really like it" were smacking it in clubs and pirate radio b4 they became commercial. "I gotta get thru this" was first played in underground clubs over a year b4 it got a commercial release.
you do know that "Urban Heroes" is set for a commercial release this August!?! what are you gonna say then? Part blame viper and Jameson for the demise of UKG? I don't think so.
and anyway, real UKG is a "hardcore" sound is it? you mean with no soulful vocals and sounding more like DnB? I don't think so. the real CORE of UKG is its sexy soulfulness connected to it's "House and Garage" roots.
the demise is as you say connected to it's association with violence and club's unwillingness to put on UKG nights etc. People are also now looking for the next fashion and the rats are about to jump ship. The UKG ship WILL float again.
Whatever you do, don't try to blame tracks that are popular enough to get attention from the majors and therefore raise the profile of this English sound which has so much talent.ICE 88.4FM

Give it time people. there IS some good stuff out there, but alot of DJs and MCs on the radio are crap and just doing it for status and not for the music. when they play the next fashionable sound then the proper UKG DJ's will be able to be heard.
The UKG scene is gonna be just like DnB. Give it time to sort itself out away from the spotlight and it will come back strong and with quality.
Too many jokers involved in the scene at the moment and are just in it for themsleves, be it for status, money or whatever other bullsh1t it is that they are onto that isn't about the music.
Time is a good healer. DnB went back underground, shook off the fleas and ......... well ........ just look at it now!
UKG will come back again, but not with all the current lightweights. Only the true lovers will stay with it and come out on the other side with there feet firmly rooted in a strong scene, and will be all the wiser to wannabe timewasters.ICE 88.4FM

- it seems useless to mention this again and again I doubt any of the peeps who got into Garage during the last 2 years will get it (a few yes - but those are feeling the roots so there's no need to explain).Originally posted by MC Para-D
and anyway, real UKG is a "hardcore" sound is it? you mean with no soulful vocals and sounding more like DnB? I don't think so. the real CORE of UKG is its sexy soulfulness connected to it's "House and Garage" roots.
- most hyped tunes are $$$$e no matter if there's good stuff out or not: the most talked about tunes are bull$$$$ if it comes to Garage. period. Maybe them are good tunes but it's not Garage and anyone who says sound is changing and developing with the times have forgotten the roots.
- 'Underground' meaning ruff, dark and non-vocal tunes? I don't think so - when UKG was underground first there were bare tunes with an uplifting vybe. The Darkside was part of UKG from the beginning but most forgot that it was the mixture that made UKG that interesting.
- I used to listen to SL's pirate radio streams for a while - I stopped it because it's absolute stupid stuff that bores me. Big Up Passion FM for their MC policy.
- I will use 'House & Garage' for our nights now. No '2-step' and no 'UK' because we cannot identify ourselves with the majority of the UK scene anymore. Prefer playing good music instead of sticking to a style that gone down straight into the sewer. We'll play any UKG we like and we will always be into it - but at this times UKG had a bad name that makes it impossible to do parties here with 'UKG' on the flyer.
Too much crap coming thru from the island and too less good stuff reaching our shops - so peeps identifying PSX music with the name 'UKG' and laughing. Annoying but reality.
And that's why I'm so against all this cheap 'it's a tool that makes the peeps move - but it has no musical quality' stuff: it destroys the work of the last 4 years of building up a scene here. And we have no influence because it cames via the internet.

Big up pru!
Your not even from England and yet you understand the whole concept of Garage far better than these fashion followers!
If I were you, call your promotions 'House and Garage' keep it a strictly sexy policy on the door with s door $$$$$ that takes no crap(all the immature 'dark' punks won't get in cos they don't know how to dress) and promote it like a funky house night.
This has been proven to work cos 3 months ago I went to a night at the Emporium in London (very stylish venue) and it had only been promoted OUTSIDE of London, mainly in Essex, and at a 'nice' crowd of peeps. Everybody was dressed up to the nines, 70% women and god damn were they fit and beautiful, boom vibe just like the old days.
The main part though.......no dark instrumental garbage!!
You see, if you target the right crowd with the right venue and the right music policy (and you stick to this) then you can have a GOOD night
and this scene will flourish!!!
And if you think that I'm posting the name of the promotion or when its next event is then you are having a laugh LOLOLOLOLOL!
Big up all the $$$$s 'feelin da next ting, ya get me'!ICE 88.4FM

Re: Re: Is UK Garage dying have to agree - it's not all bandwagon jumpers that move - I'm shure a lot of the original crowd is leaving too - because it all changed that much. And you cannot blame anyone not to stick to a style he used to love for some years because he isn't feeling it anymore.Originally posted by MC Carnage

I played out on Saturday night, and I don't boost myself up at all, but at this particular event I was one of the best DJ's on the night. The others really didn't have a clue when it came to the music. I spent half the night rolling my eyes at the poor quality of the cheesey music.
When a decent DJ came on, his set was totally spoilt by two MC's, both with mic's, chatting all over the vocals of some wicked classic tunes.
We left the club at 2:30
If I had the money, I do my own night. Small, intimate, and for the people who appreciate good grooves. I'd have a wicked selection of DJ's, and maybe just one host or singer.
I can dream for now.Shine 87.9 fm every Monday 8-10pm

and so you see, its gonna be people who will promote like Jolie that keep this scene going and going nice. they are gonna get choosy about which DJs and MCs to put on (instead of just 'bringing in their mates') and have some control over what is being played and said in their clubs.
Au Naturel: mate its not a question of living in the past.
you seem like a guy with a bit of sense. what would you rather go to? a garage night full of blokes wearing tracksuits, caps and an angry expression or a classy affair where there are lots of beautiful dressed up women and everyone is there to dance, mingle, have a laugh and chat someone up.
Recently I've been to both, and the second of the two is my choice.....................ANY DAY OF THE WEEK!!!ICE 88.4FM
