Illegal Downloads...

If music downloads were 25p each (about 40c) then a you would probably see more sales, and therefore increase revenue and perhaps some of the illegal downloaders would go legal because it's only 25p.

problem with the 'music industry' is that it is a) greedy and b) wastes lots of money on rubbish because it's always chasing the next big thing based on the last big thing and profligate in it's marketing and advertising and this need to show bling rather than finding great bands and artists and letting people love the music.

I hope the major's hit the skids, because in the gap that follows thousands of independent labels with music in their souls will fill the void.

Music will never die and neither will making a living from it. but if the current climate leads to less soulless multi-millionaires and more artists making a living, then aside from the shareholders of the majors, who's going to care?

Why people download music illegally is beyond me. Why download and put your home at risk for a few tracks? Why not get the music for free?

That not a plug either. I have never illegally downloaded music as i dont think its right, if i like an album or artist i will pay for it out off respect to the artist. Radiohead did a good thing last year as they released there album on the web and asked people how much they were prepared to pay for it.

I think we need to stamp out illegal downloads which will be hard, but i also think we need to change peoples mindsets as well. The issues is itunes aswell, one its to pricey and it also has a large market share and is only just starting to open up itunes so you can download mp3 from various online retailers which then defaults it in to your library which is good things.

However some common sense needs to put in to play here. We cannot jsut cut people offline.

Illegal music downloads make all musicians on this forum struggling more to get the gig to get signed or just to get paid.

People who download music illegally should know that:

1) making music takes years of music education that cost a lot of money
2) recording music requires an equipment that cost a lot of money
3) recording music requires paying for studio time and mixing and mastering that cost a lot of money
4) musicians are human beings that need to pay their bills just like you -if you steal their music they will never be able to make some new music and they will never play live again
5) promoting music costs money-photos, Cd duplication, creating websites


I understand people who live in undeveloped countries -they just wanna enjoy music they can not afford - but if you live in the UK, Europe, Japan,USA it means you can afford $0.99 to pay for one song !

I have registered on this forum yesterday and I have noticed someone uploading the whole discographies of artists!!! WTF ???
I don't want to start any flame war but this should not be allowed. It is illegal and should be reported to authorities.

What kind of music fan will post the discography of the artist he/she supposedly supports. Unless this person does that to damage these artists career????

Illegal downloading in my opinion is awful - it is taking someone's creative output as well as the hard work of everyone else involved for free. However, having said that, if there are ways to make file-sharing easier and cheaper but working to the benefit of all involved, such as use of streaming services that require a subscription fee whilst raising the profile of artists resulting in them having increased sales, then that is great. Only problem here though is that the royalties that filter through from these streaming services is tiny. Smaller labels would not get much at all from that and although great for profile, cashflow is always going to be a problem until an artist is massive. I dunno what the answer is! The technology is there...no idea how to resolve the issues!
