Raymond Douglas Davies was born at 6 Denmark Terrace, Fortis Green in Muswell Hill, North London, in 1944. His brother Dave Davies was born at the same address in 1947. Ray was the seventh and Dave the eighth children born to Fred and Annie Davies, they have six older sisters.
As chilrden the Davies brothers were immersed in a world of different musical styles, from the music hall of their parents' generation, to the jazz and early rock n' roll that their older sisters listened to. The siblings developed a rivalry early on, with both brothers competing for their parents' and sisters' attention, a rivalry which grew and has become legendary.
Both brothers formed The Kinks in Muswell Hill, North London, in 1964. Categorised in the United States as a British Invasion band, The Kinks are recognised as one of the most important and influential London rock acts of the era. Their music was influenced by a wide range of genres, including rhythm and blues, British music hall, folk and country. Ray Davies (lead vocals, rhythm guitar) and Dave Davies (lead guitar, vocals) remained members throughout the group's 32-year run.
"I sometimes think that Ray was only happy for three-and-a-half years in his life. And those were the three-and-a-half years before I was born," Dave admitted.
"Ray is a vain, egocentric, narcissistic a****hole. But I won't have anybody call him that except me. Because I love him to death."
