BEEF! To the Local Record Stores: I Don't Get It!
Please explain something to me. I heard last week that one of the local record store employees blew-up the patio at Utopia with his phat 2-Step set. Now, maybe your store actually started CARRYING 2-Step in the last few months...but I doubt it. I wrote the store a few weeks ago asking if they were carrying 2-Step yet and no one bothered replying to my e-mail. The fact that you don't bother replying says to me that you hate 2-Step and you don't want my money. So why are you spinning it?
I don't bother coming to your shop anymore because there was nothing for me to buy there. I had hundreds of dollars in cash burning a hole in my pocket for about 2-3 months. All I ever saw in your store was Nu NRG, Progressive, Trance, Commercial House, DnB, Breaks and a bunch of empty record shelves that could have been partially filled with 2-Step. I spent some money at your store, about $400. Since you didn't have 2-Step, I tried out your Nu NRG. I tried out your Progressive. I didn't like it. When I came in looking for 2-Step, one of you told me that there were some selections in the Breaks section that sound "sorta like 2-Step...."
But I want 2-Step, not Breaks that sound sorta like it. It is an exact style with a specific beat template. Obviously you know that because you're mixing it. Your store used to tell me to come down every week and listen to your selections. Am I supposed to buy something that isn't 2-Step when I'm looking for 2-Step? Why would I go there if there isn't anything for me to buy? Should I just start spinning the music you happen to stock instead of what I like to play?
Apparently, you won't order the records for me, but you'll order the records for yourself. Then you'll go out and spin 2-Step in public, make profit from it, and answer questions from the other DJs about this hot new dance music you're playing, because they were too stupid to even HEAR of it before now...but it's not "profitable" enough to have the tracks in-stock at your store? Well, $$$$ you then.
You offered to special order the $$$$ I find at the on-line record stores so I "wouldn't have to order it all the way from the UK." Why should I wait 2-4 extra weeks for you to get off your ass and look through your distributors' listings when I can just click on the $$$$ the moment I find it and have it here in 3 days? You had your chance. I gave you six widely available 2-Step records to order for me. First you waited a month before you even TRIED to order them. Then you told me you couldn't find them anywhere. That whole time, I could have purchased them on-line. They were in-stock EVERYWHERE.
If you want me to spend money at your store, you gotta have the $$$$ IN THE STORE. Don't just give me some false promise that you'll do your best to find it. For all I know, you just don't want the competition. You want to be the only one spinning 2-Step, so it can be all about you. You want to promote it as the "hot new thing" and you want to act like you're the one who introduced 2-Step to Vegas. Fine. Reach for the stars.
When 2-Step IS popular enough to sell more copies and you can bother to make room in your half-empty store for it, I'm gonna remember the bull$$$$ I saw and heard from you before. I'm probably gonna keep ordering my $$$$ on-line, from people who give a $$$$ about 2-Step and who know what they're doing. Right now, your store is only there to serve YOU. Not to serve the public. So you won't get my money.
So keep using your little buddy's connections and spinning those 2-Step sets on your little superclub patio. I don't give a $$$$. Cuz you don't carry my records and your store ain't $$$$ to me.
Thanks for supporting 2-Step...(as long as it's profitable for you and benefits you personally).
