Default A theory - can music affect verbal errors, mainly among young girls?

I have come up with a theory about verbal slips/errors, mainly among girls aged 13-25. I'd really like you to let me know your views on the theory.

It's probably safe to say, first of all, that music is the main interest among the vast majority of girls in this age group and will be on their brain most of the time. When they get home from school, they always go straight to their iPod, the music channels etc.

And as Freud said, verbal slips will always be subconsciously linked with something that is on he back of your mind. So my theory is, that about 80% of the verbal slips young girls make are to do with current songs or artists in some way.

And since I suggested this, it eerily seems to be true!!! Just to give a couple of examples here that I heard on a recent caravan holiday from the 18-ish year old redcoats: One of them said "do-so" instead of "also", and I think this is connected with Pixie Lott because she has a song "Mama DO" and a song "ALL About Tonight". Then the next day, another young redcoat hosting the bingo said "Eyes closed" instead of "Eyes down" and I think this was because of Eyes Wide Shut by JLS.

There's been loads more like this, and it also seems that when older people make slips, I can't link them to music! And it also seems that older people do more slips that are to do with relevant words, i.e words from the same or the previous sentence, and younger people don't so much. And this alone shows younger people have something else on their mind more than the words relevant at that moment in time.

Another variation on this theory is that I think that most of the verbal slips people who are famous singers will make are going to be linked with their own songs (e.g Pixie Lott will do slips connected with Pixie Lott songs, Katy Perry will do slips to do with Katy Perry songs etc.). And their own songs really will be what's in their mind all the time, considering the amount of time they have to spend rehearsing them, performing them etc.

Again, having seen some interviews since then, this seems to be true. I've seen some interviews of The Saturdays, and they keep doing slips that are related to their songs. One of them said something like "We've had a lot of miss-miss-hits" and they had a song "I miss missing you". Then on another interview one of them said 'up' instead of 'every', and they have a song called 'Up'. There's been loads more like this too.

Then I saw a Pixie Lott interview, and she stuttered a bit on the word 'about', saying something like 'abou-about'. As I said earlier, she sung a song "All About Tonight".

And it's impossible to, for instance, find Pixie Lott or Lady GaGa connections in the slips The Saturdays make, but it's easy to find ones connected with their own songs.

So, please do let me know what you honestly think of this theory.

Although it may not 'matter' as such, it's very interesting once you know about it. And it just IS true. I've yet to hear a girl make a slip and NOT be able to link it with a song that's popular at the moment.

They also seem to make more slips to do with Pixie Lott than any other artist I notice, and would you agree she was the most popular artist among young girls at the moment???

The links you suggest are so incredibly tenuous. If you accept that with the sheer number of people and events in the world, certain coincidences are going to happen however coincidental they seem. If you look for a pattern, you're quite sure to find one. If we take Lady Gaga for instance, and wrote down every word used in any song title of hers, yes, they're bound to come up. This theory is entirely possible since people do make slips and people do like music but there's no where near enough evidence.

OK, so here's the names of all GaGa's songs (excluding album tracks, B-sides etc. which fewer people know about):

    Just Dance
    Poker Face
    Paparazzi
    Love Game
    Bad Romance
    Telephone
    Alejandro
    Born This Way
    Judas
    The Edge Of Glory
    You And I

Not that many words to pick from really, is there???

At the moment the most common culprit for slips seems to be Pixie Lott, and I can't believe the amount of times I've heard young girls slip on the words do and all alone. And since What Do You Take Me For was released, I've heard 2 or 3 slips on What and 1 on Take. When i didn't before. No coincidence, I'm sorry.

Even Janet forgetting the words to MmmBop on Saturday's X Factor was because of Pixie Lott.

The song says the word 'do' all the time, and as I said lots of young girls are slipping up on words related to Pixie Lott ('do' being 1 of them because of Mama Do), so no coincidence that Janet (a 16 year old girl), out of all the songs she's sung, messed up one that predominatly features the word 'do'.

hey R-123... have you looked at the illuminati connection with all the artists you suggest.. conspiracy types would have a field day with a theory like this... altho there numerous NLP type scenarios that could lead to it... whats demographic of "young girls" are you using as a data sample?? are these girls that are say more into contemporary music than say classical musicians in the same age group, or ballet dancers who may have been exposed to differnt kinds of music in the majority of their experience??

I think is possible dangerous to say all young girls without identifying the sample group your ussing initially... are they MTV viewers as TBH i avoid artists like pixie lott as they tend not to be as musically talented as many other artists that have far lesser PR campaigns to back them up but ooodles more talent...

"music is the main interest among the vast majority of girls in this age group and will be on their brain most of the time." I think you will find that it's boys not music, hence the number of boy bands the labels push...

Well I wouldn't say ALL young girls, but I'd say the vast majority of young girls are the type that are into MTV, contemporary music, Pixie Lott etc. It seems that wherever I go, and hear young girls talk, they make slips that are to do with music. And it's not as if I'm only hearing them in places such as nightclubs, I also hear them from totally random girls working in shops, on the bus etc. who could be of any type. I even heard a couple in Card Factory and Hawkin's Bazaar!!!!

True, but then again, the interest in boys, believe it or not, relates to the interest in music. The music they like is either (as you suggest) boy bands such as JLS and The Wanted because they find the boys attractive, girly pop music such as Pixie Lott or Rihanna which is about copying the way they dance in the videos in order to attract a boy, or dance/R&B such as Example, Tinie Tempah etc. which is made for dancing in the clubs...where they pick up boys.
