Default Compression query.

I'm a bit confused!

I understand the basics of compression, but I dont understand what I should set my threshold to in comparison to the level on the mixer, and also where the RATIO part comes into play, and how this affects it?

Could someone give me a little run down here, I dont need a documentation or huge explanation becuase I know what compression is but I just dont understand those two bits!

but when you can "hear" a different sound other than the gain, it means u've over-compressed it!

Threshold is where your compression kicks in. Everything before the threshold is unchanged, everything after is compressed by the RATIO you have set up. If the ratio is set to 2:1, then the compressor will compress at a rate of two to one (light compression) - it will take a signal 2dB over the threshold and knock it down to 1dB. If it's set to 15:1 it will be a much more severe effect - more like limiting - making it have to be 15dB over the threshold to get the extra 1dB.

Attack and release time is also very important to how a compressor "sounds", but you should find an actual text somewhere that explains this.
