Default b2k - uh huh (preficks remicks) comments please

B2K - Uh Huh (Preficks Remicks) Click here

this is my first production ever... ive been toying with reason/acid for the past 2 weeks... this is what i have come up with. i am not satisfied with it at all... but im so new at this i need some tips from those more experienced... so if you could please comment on your first impressions as well as some technical things in the track.

things i know need work...

-bassline... i got SOOO frustrated with this, i finally decided to just stick it up to see what you think i should do with it...

-verse 3 vocals have some distortion in them, its in the acapella, so i know about this but dont know how to fix it...

please... if you are going to say this sucks, please tell me why... if you are going to bash this for no reason, please do not reply, i want to get into production seriously, so im all about constructive criticism and arrows pointing me in the right direction. thanks

First off, the arrangement is good, the beat's decent, the vibe/electric piano melody is nice, and you picked a good a capella to work with - so overall impression is a good one. The breakdown around 2:35 is strange, not really feeling it, BUT the way you got out of it was EXCELLENT. At times the vocal seems crowded, but if the a capella was like that, there's not much you can do.

I'm not up with what reason can do, so here's a few simple things that can make things more lively.

1. Work with some delays to give some space to the mix.
2. Compress/limit the drums (esp. kick) to make them more tight and snappy.
3. There's a hum/buzz through the whole thing.

You definitely have nothing to be embarrased or shy about - this is an outstanding first effort.

The hum/buzz can be due to lots of things - dodgy samples / input of the B2K acapella into the computer most likely - clean that up and try that out again.

How to space out an acapella - cut it up syllable by syllable in recycle and resequence to tighten up the timing. Mission yes. Worth it. Maybe.

In reason, you can add effect routings etc. and you can use the sends on the ReDrum to affect how much of a sound goes Post Fader to an effects unit.

The delay idea is a good one as your mix sounds "compact" with the same level of sound always coming out of the vibes/piano...instead of repeating notes, use a timed/synched delay to get the notes to come out as delay ghosts rather than actual notes...will lighten up the mix and create some space.

You can also change up the velocities of your MIDI on events.
