I think JJ and others were talking at cross purposes as if you are working on contracted bizness it pays to push quality production values whereas a lot of bedroom studios are just writing/demo joints that can with care get to a pressing stage.

It's a fair point. I understand where JJ is coming from, but if I want a 2 step live pattern, then I'll record one in the first place, rather than tweaking a 4/4. While I'd love to beef up my studio, most garage productions came from budget set-ups initially - it's only after making money that way that we can afford to upgrade in most cases.
