Word on the Street is the Grimey Limeys have been going from meeting to meeting, A&R Managers itching to sign them. Remember the Raw Mission Hype Squad? Is copy of ‘Blaze Dem Raw' present in your collection? Well this is the next step, and if you were into them previously or are a fan of British rap, it's a step you're sure to love. The Grimey Limeys are one of the collectives that the Hype Squad branched into. I caught up with the Grimeyest Limey, MC Sloth to find out a little bit more...
Hype Squad were tipped to be the next big thing a year ago in RWD Magazine... what's happened since? Are they still together? What projects are they up to? Nah man, Hype Squad is done. Mans has all branched off to do their own thing. There's us, the Grimey Limeys, then SLK, Grimesville and the Smooth Crims. Everyone's doing their own thing but mans is all still part of Bionic Beats, which means we still see each other.
What are the others up to? Peck rolled with me and we formed the Grimey Limeys... 2za, Sparkler and Jiggy formed Grimesville, Flirta and Adam stuck with SLK, and Wunda and Ceazer and them man formed Smooth Crims.
What happened? You were HYPEd up big time, then didn't blow... There's loads of reasons... politics, $$$$ A&R's, and bad management! Plus were there was so many of us in the Hype Squad ‘nuff of us wanted different things. In all honesty we could of been a big commercial success doin' cheesy Blazin' Squad tunes but that just ain't our vibe!
So who are the Grimey Limey members? The MC's are me - Slotheo, Peck, Silva 7, Sky and Slyness... DJs - Dayzel Doink and Randy C... Producer - Kolbi.
Why is there only you lot in the Grimey Limeys? ‘Cause when you are working in a unit you must be working with people you can trust!
Why did you choose Silva to join the Grimey Limeys, as he wasn't a Hype Squad member? Silva gas been around from day one, I've known him since he was at primary school, so I've had the pleasure of watching him mature into a heavy artist! Plus as I was saying before, check the word unit and put a ‘Y' there you seeing me now?
Why the name? ‘Cause we're Grimey and we're English an we're proud. For them that don't know, ‘Limeys' is what the Yanks and Ozzie's call us.
Isn't having the word 'Grime' in the name restricting yourself? Dont be so stupid man! In what way?! We make music 4 the street!
Do you still use the aliases Sloth Suprano, Sly Da Model, Rapido, Kolbi Kold Box, and Peckarate? Sometimes... they was names given 2 us in the Hype Squad days... we all got ‘nuff aliases!
What do you hope to achieve as the Grimey Limeys? We want people to hear our music and appreciate it - world domination is on the cards!
If you had to compare yourself to a chocolate bar, which would it be? If man was a chocolate I'd b a King Size Yorkie blad - it's big, strong, and hard 2 eat!
Do you feel you have advanced and can achieve more since the Hype Squad break-up or would you have prefered it if you had all stayed together? Nah nah nah! We have all stepped up so much since them days - the quality of music being produced by us mans, Grimey Limeys, at the moment is just too much! So there's no way I'd change that.
Why did you make the move from UKG to Hip Hop? Is that a reflection of the scene today? Yeah, to be honest we ain't feeling this computer game music at the moment... you know I hate to say it, but the garage/sub-low scene - whatever you call it these days is in a bad way; everything is becoming monotonous!
These days everyone seems to be a DJ, MC or part of a Crew... what makes you different? We is all original and u need to be just that! Plus there's no one out there doing what we do, so there's no competition... get ma?!
Who do you rate most in the scene at the moment? Hmmmmmm... [Sloth starts laughing]!
What happened to the collaborations with Wu Tang? They're still there... they will get released one day.
What do you have in the pipeline? Well for the last year we've just been in the studio working ‘nuff hard... we got well over 50 tracks, and they're all grimey, so we will just start putting records out now, an sit back and see wha' blow...it's nice having A&R's kiss your arse! Also I've been getting followed by the BBC for the last 8 months, so check the documentary on the 7th of January on the BBC. We have a video for one of our tracks "You Don't Know Me", coming out very very shortly... I could go on and on but I won't... just watch!
'You Don't Know Me' and ‘Wiggaz', are out on white label now in all good record shops. Catch the Grimey Limeys every Sunday on Raw-Mission 90.00fm 8-10 pm. Keep it locked to UKMusicWorldwide.com for exclusive Grimey Limey audio coming soon.
