Every now and then, us kats here at UKMusic.com feature some wonderful British artists who we think are on the verge of blowing up (not literally of course). We done it with Wiley, we done it with Dizzee Rascal and this time around, we’re doing it with the Dixon Bros. Made up of brothers Justin Dixon, 28 and Adrian Dixon, 24, the duo are occupying flyers across London, following their recent residency at the Plan B nightclub in Brixton. The brothers from Wallington and Beddington (two little villages near Purely) have stolen our features limelight for this week.
Let’s find out why.
UKM: How did the Dixon Bros come about?
AD: We spent most of our DJ’ing days in clubs at opposite ends of the UK. Once I finished University, instead of battling each other it made sense to combine our different styles and knowledge of music to create a DJ tag team - it was a damn good idea!
UKM: Adrian, what’s it like being the younger brother? Does Justin nick your stuff?
AD: Being the younger brother is good, as I know that I always have my older brother to back me up if ever I need it. How ever yeah, he does have a tendency to liberate a few of my possessions but what am I really going to say?
JD: Nothing if you know what’s good for you
UKM: What have you guys been up to lately?
AD: Lately it’s all been about pushing the Dixon Bros brand forward. We’re both really focused on spreading the good word of the Dixon Bros worldwide. In addition to rocking the party at our residencies at Plan B (Fidgit) and Westow House Crystal Palace, we have been in the lab concocting the recipe for the next Dixon Bros parties.
UKM: Do we have any mix-tapes or albums to look forward to?
AD: Justin and I are currently working on the new mix; one half for the clubs and the other to kick back and really enjoy some choice beats. Expect to hear a variety quality tunes all cut, mixed and scratched together!
JD: It’s sounds frightening – I can’t wait to get it finished! In the meantime there are a couple of old classics knocking around on our Myspace page (below).
UKM: Where would be your ideal place to perform?
AD: For me it would probably be a block party in New York. That would be crazy!
JD: A full moon beach-party that’s somewhere exotic
UKM: Which types of music do you play?
AD: We play what ever the crowd want to chuck shapes too. You could be listening to James Brown then find yourself doing the James Brown shuffle to Dizzie Rascal. We’re known to go from Funk to Soul, Hip Hop, Jazz, Indie, Broken Beat, Funky House, Ol School Garage, Drum & Bass etc. The underlining thing that keeps our set together is fun with a healthy slapping of turntablism!
UKM: Who is on your iPod right now?
AD: The new M.I.A album
JD: Tom Middleton – The Trip (I forgot how good that was).
UKM: Tell us a little about your Plan B residency. What nights do you play and who hooked that up?
AD: We are both residents at a night called Fidgit, which happens every Friday at the Plan B nightclub in Brixton. This was a night that Justin was already playing at before he invited me to join him. It’s a night for people who really enjoy a party and aren’t into standing around looking hard whilst listening to the same old tunes.
JD: Nah, Adrian was like “why can’t I play too? You never bring me out with you – remember that time on my 11th birthday…” It got too much to bear and so I had to let him in.
UKM: Who are your musical influences?
AD: I’m influenced by people like Jay Dilla, Jazzy Jeff, Busta Rhymes and James Brown.
JD: I’d add 4 Hero, Buggz, Todd, Dj Gregory, Tribe and De La.
UKM: Who is the bossiest out of the two of you and can working with family sometimes be too overwhelming?
AD: After discussing this it has emerged that I am. I have a tendency to be a bit pushy but that’s just because I’m passionate about what we do.
JD: I let him get away with it until… CLAP!
UKM: Where do you hope to be in five years time?
AD: In five years we would dearly love to be taking bookings all over the world. Touring is really where it’s at.
UKM: Anyone you’d like to big up?
AD: I’d like to firstly salute Mum and Dad. It sounds very cliché but when you have parents who come to your nights and party harder than the younger kats, you got to really show some love.
