Random Impulse Interview |

Hailing from North London is music’s most incomparable aspiring artist, Random Impulse. The difference between Impulse and surrounding music professionals trying to break through the scene is that he has more than a game plan, he has a future. Forget the trends forget the attitude and strip down the egos then you have Random Impulse, an artistic professional with a business plan.
Jovel Walker isn’t your typical wanna-be-MC, although peers would mess about with music and rhymes Jovel was more interested in his education. It wasn’t until he was 18 that he found an artistic interest,
“I didn’t actually have any musical background I was more study based, I mean the first piece of music I bought was the ‘Blueprint’ album by Jay-Z.”
Musical taste buds then took a liking to the likes of Kanye West and Common
“no one actually inspired me to get into music coz when I first looked at rhyme I saw it as being more technical as opposed to emotional.”
But as his peers kept crafting their musical skills Jovel got the incline to try it out for himself, and it didn’t take him long to discover the elements of music production and rhyme. Having found an intriguing ability, Jovel Walker, musically known as Random Impulse, began to perfect his craft and develop a style of his own. Although he specialises in Hip Hop and Grime Impulse is far from trying to follow a street trend,
“my music is very versatile; it’s very true and very real. It reflects everyday life, there’s nothing else that moves me. I don’t ever put on a front for the sake of it because people want it; I want people to connect to my music. Its not all massive chunks from my life its from surrounding experiences and when you put it into rhyme you express it in a different way, I express how important it is”
Impulse was previously represented through Inner Circle who had the likes of Ms Dynamite on their books,
“My first live performance was through Inner Circle at The Peoples Choice Awards which was pretty big. I did really well but I was bricking it! I was terrified!”
Since then Random Impulse has performed various events and club nights including the likes of Eskimo Dance, Mindi Showcase, Lyrical Lounge at Yo! Bar and just recently performed at the Love Music Hate Racism event alongside the likes of Tinchy Stryder. In 2005 Random Impulse released the ‘WHO’S THAT NEW KID?’ single where he sold 2,000 units. He later recorded ‘BACK DOWN’ produced by exceptional UK producer Dexplicit, and the music video got to NO.2 in the Channel U top 20 video chart. ‘WORD ON THE STREET’ was the first official mix tape released last year in July which consisted of 2 CD’s, one being Hip Hop and the other Grime,
“the main thing that is missing in our scene is the marketing, I pressed up 1000 CD’s myself and printed them up on black discs to make them look different. 44 tracks were sold for £4.44 and I distributed it myself on road and independent online and street music stores and I made guest appearances on radio with DJ Cameo on 1xtra and Logan Sama on KISS FM. It was the biggest selling Grime CD”
A whopping 10,000 copies were sold overall within 6 months and to this day is Impulses biggest musical achievement,
“I didn’t go through certain avenues like speaking to Wiley to help push the project, there was so much surrounding me even from my close friends, but I done this by myself and I put so much money into the project so I’m really proud of it.”
Random Impulse now 22 years old has learnt a lot about the UK music scene and watched peers trying to break through the scene, he’s learnt that doesn’t want to be just another MC
“Artists need to change there whole approach, its so unprofessional. In terms of us getting promoted it’s down to us, it’s how we carry ourselves. We’re mirroring the US culture; it’s become fashion to MC. I run a studio and I see loads of people come in and out saying they wanna make a mix-tape and they wanna make a promo. The most common thing I hear is like ‘yeah I need to get big’ I won’t collaborate with people who come to me because I have a name for myself and try to use it. I don’t understand that, it’s all about fame and its so obvious”
Impulse also realises how important it is to find your own sound and make yourself stand above what’s already out there, not mimic it,
“If I ever gave you my first mix-tape you’ll understand what kind pf artist I am today. I would NEVER give you my first mix-tape and if you ever heard you’d be like what the hell is this! (Laughs) I had to go away and find myself and I’ve developed loads. Even though I got caught up in certain trends back then it was still heading to where I wanted to be but I had no idea of my music. But now I write about whatever I want no matter how weird and strange it is.”
To date Random Impulse is working for a management and licensing company in America where he’s been recording music adverts,
“that’s my main way of making money right now and because it’s a big time difference in America they’d ring me up and say they need something in like 4 hours”
He’s been recording his forthcoming mix-tape ‘THE FULL METAL ALCHEMIST’, which is set for release in March,
“I’ve recorded a couple of tracks with this guy in America called The Secret Handshake, so I’m doing a couple of tour dates with him. I’m going over to America as I have 4 majors interested in me but I’m also looking at indie, but if indies don’t buy it then I’ll go with a major although I’d rather go with an indie (Laughs). I’m taking it as it comes.”
‘THE FULL ACHEMIST’ mix-tape consists of compelling music production that is flawless throughout, and even if you haven’t heard previous projects you can still understand how Impulse has developed into a mature musical professional. This project doesn’t distinguish the Grime and Hip Hop music genres; it’s simply a representation of Random Impulse music. The lyrics, his energy and the way he delivers his sound is overwhelming ear candy, if Random Impulse continues to represent himself in this manor he is most definitely has a thriving musical venture ahead of him.
“Be comfortable in yourself and be confident, take the critism and learn from it. Don’t change just because one person doesn’t like it.”
