Ocean Colour Scene (often abbreviated to OCS) are a rock band from Birmingham, England. They were formed after two other local bands called The Boys and Fanatics disbanded. Fanatics released an E.P. titled Suburben Love Songs.
With the explosion of the Britpop scene, OCS's music became nationally and internationally known. Their second album Moseley Shoals was received to critical acclaim, containing four hit singles and reaching the heights of number 2 in the UK Albums Chart and the follow up, Marchin' Already displacing Oasis at the top of the charts.
They are now back in 2007 with a new album, On The Leyline, which they will be touring up and down the country.
UKMusic.com has a quick chat with Steve Craddock from Ocean Colour Scene.
Why is this album called On The Leyline?
It was the best one we came up with, taken from a song called On The Leyline, Waiting.
What's different about this album compared to others you've recorded in the past?
We tried to keep it quite direct without strings or pianos.
Is this album quite personal?
Yes, it’s our new baby.
Who did you work with on this album?
Jon Rivers produced it for usin Leamington Spa.
I see you're going on tour in April. What do you find most enjoyable about touring the UK?
We’re playing more satellite towns, not the obvious main cities which is a refreshing change.
Have you ever had any embarrassing moments on stage?
Apart from splitting trousers and spitting blood, no!
Are there any tracks in particular that you're looking forward to performing?
I love each and every track which is going to make this tour great.
Why did you decide against a big deal with Universal to put this album out independently?
We have been down the major label route before and this seemed new and exciting.
Do you think downloading has changed the face of music?
Absolutely, I think singles are leading the race again.
What do you think of the newer bands out there?
As good and bad as ever. It’s like its 1979 again.
What's next for Ocean Colour Scene?
We’re going to have a great tour, release the second single and then work on the new album!
