New Hope For Glideascope Print E-mail
Wednesday, 30 August 2006

Facebook!

It’s that moment of a sad film. That dramatic ending which obliterates the film’s function’s completely and diverts the serenity of the storyline to its highly balanced pivoting point. What makes the real tear jerker in a film or documentary? Could it be the powerful exposure of passion, hate or revenge? Ok, well maybe it is, but the background music I assure plays a high importance in any documentary or cinematic beast.  Glideascope is the new 2006 composer, having his music being used by the likes of Channel 4 and MTV. At the highest peak of his career, UK Music managed to catch a few seconds with the young Mozart and here’s what he had to say…

What have you been up to lately? I

’ve been spending time promoting the single 'Big Big Disgrace'.

How does it feel to have Channel 4 and MTV want to play your music?

My music is ideally suited for documentaries, and to have MTV in the United States and Channel 4 here in the UK licensing the music for their shows - allows my music to be exposed to a new audience.  I am hoping this is just the start of my music being used in this way and hopefully opening up the possibility of scoring music for films.

I've heard the 'Big Big Disgrace' track recently. It's electric! What influences you when you're composing your music?

Usually it is a mood or 'feeling'.  Big Big Disgrace discusses the issues relating to society and the environment so there had to be a balance between melancholy and uplifting, adding weight to Junior Ruff's point of view.  For most of the tracks I draw upon the roots of Reggae, world music, electronica and classical orchestration.  I want to compose music that not only makes you want to 'nod' your head but willAlso draw you in and evoke emotion with the music having as much impact as the lyrics.

I hear you were selected as one of the featured artists for this year's Winter Music Conference in Miami. What ambitions do you have of yourself in the future?

The WMC in Miami is the largest dance music conference in the world, and theCompetition was fierce to appear on the official compilation CD.  The track used was Istanbul which features on the album and provides one of the most cinematic pieces on the album - being almost 9 minutes long.  A short movie was created to a director's cut of this track and is possible to view on YouTube.com

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M-p6GPP71wo

This video was shot in Notting Hill and surrounding areas - it showcases how in one day in London you can encounter so many different cultures and inspiration.
In terms of future ambition, writing music scores full time.

Tell us more about the forthcoming album. I hear good things.

The forthcoming album 'Audio Cinematography' is what I like to call a soundtrack to a movie never made.  It has 18 tracks (plus one hidden track) which is an auto-biography - I wanted to offer something unique - almost a video experience from an audio CD.  With the listener writing their own screenplay and coming up with their own ideas on how the music makes them feel.  The album took over two years to complete, I wanted to avoid samples where possible and use real instrumentation - especially on the strings.  On this album you will hear a soundclash of African and Indian melodies, melodic cinematic strings and chill out beats.

Would you consider the music industry is in dire need for more composers such as yourself?

Well I am biased, but I believe adding contemporary rhythms to classical composition you can create the best of both worlds.  Electronic music can tend to be one dimensional or monotonous, and classical music can be elitist and out of reach for many young people.  Some artists such as Massive Attack have taken part in writing movie scores but they still rely on employing classical orchestrators to arrange and compose the orchestral parts.  With Glideascope I want to be involved in creating all the musical parts as this is the only way to guarantee a faithful translation from my imagination to the recording.

Is there anything else we should know about Glideascope? I've been spending a lot of time online, connecting with fans on MySpace and other social networks a few examples are listed below. You can remix the current single 'Big Big Disgrace' and create your own ringbone at YourSpins.com.

Anyone you'd like to big up?

The Glideascope street team (especially Neve, Dannielle, Liam, Pav and Pankizzle) who help to spread the word on all that is happening with Glideascope!

Unique, and perfected. Perfect for listening to when on a bus, making my way into the city centre, or sitting at home, working.
