Multi-platform award winning dance-hall star Beenie Man, dubbed by some to be the roughest, toughest bad man from out of Jamaica shows his softside when it comes to the lady in his life...
What is the style of the new album?
It’s not a different type of music to my other albums; it’s mainly dancehall and reggae with hardcore roots and hip hop. We’ve got Scott Storch on there too.
What are your favourite tracks on the album? If you’ve got favourite tracks that means you’re limiting yourself so I’d say I don’t have a favourite track. I like them all!
Why is this album different to your others? The last album I did was two years ago so the style is slightly different. If you listen to King of The Dancehall and Hmm Hmm they are two different songs but the same topic. You have to evolve in music and be futuristic.
Are there any collaborations that you really enjoyed doing?
The track with Elaine was a song that I really liked recording because it was written for my girlfriend who I’ve been with for a while. I’m a man; I’m supposed to have a girlfriend!
Is there anyone who you wanted to work with on this album but didn’t have the chance?
Jadakiss, but he was too busy!
Why was it decided that Girls (feat. Akon) would be the next single released in the UK?
Hmm Hmm was the single we were supposed to put out but we didn’t have a video for it but we already had the Girls video for the UK market and the radio stations were already playing it.
How does it feel being so successful in the music industry that you can afford to buy anything you want?
It’s good to be a legend and making hit songs. Being a multi-platinum artist and award winner is a great feeling. I buy clothes, cars and houses, I believe in houses because you can’t lose your money that way. I’m a car freak; my favourite car is a Bentley.
I heard you’re working on a film, how’s that going?
It’s coming on well, we haven’t started shooting yet but we’re finding locations and sorting out scripts for November. The movie is gonna be wicked though, trust me! It will be myself acting with a few other stars.
How do you think dancehall has changed over the years?
It’s changed a lot because it’s become industrial. Everybody has a contract and wants to make money and make videos but that’s not where dancehall is coming from. Dancehall comes from a group of people where music was playing on a sound system. The DJ’s of today are the ones playing the records and making the beats.
What do you think of reggaeton as a genre of music?
Reggaeton is a secondary form of dancehall so we’re supporting that. We started dancehall music and Spanish artists took our songs and sung them over back in the day until they created their own style using our influence that they could sit down and write their own lyrics to. I really respect that. I’ve known Daddy Yankee long time, they support our music so why can’t we support theirs?
Is there anything you can tell me that nobody else knows yet?
I’m getting married August 22nd!
