The growth of UKHH has been compelling over the last couple of years, and although we battle with settling down a market for this music genre, the hardship never seems to faze potential talents from pursuing their musical ambitions. Dap-C is one of many artists grinding his way through this crazy venture we call an ‘industry’, and so far his journey has been successful. With 2 more albums set for release and a string of mix tapes, Nina Carmela studies the history behind Dap-C’s musical profile.
Battle-Hill, Newcastleis the home of Craig Dalziel aka Dap-C who is one of the finest rap artists rising through the UK music scene to date. Musical ambitions were awakening Craig’s inspirations from a young age and by the time he was 16 he was already performing at local nightclubs and writing his own rhymes, “as far back as I can remember I've loved music, it’s been the only thing in my life I'm truly interested in. I started writing rhymes very young, but it wasnt until my 18th birthday that I hired a studio and started to record proper tracks,” and although industry knowledge was limited, Dap-C continued to trust his musical instincts, “I just never gave up and tried every avenue possible to try & get my music, which is something I still do to this day, hence this interview!”
Having inspirations from the likes of NWA, Snoop Dogg, Ice T, Dr.Dre, Michael Jackson, Guns N Roses and Luther Vandross, it wasn’t until Dap-C was convicted with fraud in 2002 that he began to use his inspirations to focus on music whilst he was in prison. After he was released his determination led him straight into the hands of long time friend and producer Dom P in which he recorded his debut album, ‘CHARACTER BUILDING’, within 3 days! Dap-C describes his music as being ‘fun’ and the stories behind the rhyme are from his own experiences, “most of my tracks are true stories, so basically my life inspires me”, and it’s because of this confidence that independent label Sin Nombre Records signed him up and released the album the following year.
But it wasn’t long before Dap-C wanted to build an empire of his own, N.G.U Records, so he left Sin Nombre and has dropped various projects independently. 2007 has been a busy year for Dap-C, he released his fifth mix tape ‘THE RICHEST MISFIT’ along with 3 music video’s, “the mix tape has collab's with Skinnyman & Big Cakes, I included them on this project cause they’re two of my favourite artists. The rest of the guests are my peeps like Geejay, Mc Beads & The BC” This musical venture has also included many events, “my first Hip Hop performance was the first date of a tour which started in Belguim - I loved it, I heard there’s video footage of it kicking around on the web” and since then he has performed globally, “I supported MIM's on his UK tour this year, that definitely been the most fun I've had on a tour, and that’s all I’m saying!”.
‘THE RICHEST MISFIT’ is the 5thmix tape released from Dap-C, his discography also consists of features on UK Takeover and N.G.U Records compilations. The various producers on this mix tape give a modest complex of original and versatile Hip Hop production, as well as bringing pure UKcreativity to the project. Credits include Dom-P, DJ Maestro, Dirty Sweet and Dap-C himself along with compelling collaborations with Skinnyman, S.Kalibre, Big Cakes, The BC and Geejay to name a few. Dap-C has a lot of energy in his deliverance and its interesting hearing his swagger, this representing just one of many talents across the UK.
He’s also not a stranger to national TV with the string of music videos taken from the mix tape include, ‘THE BOY WHO CRIED WOLF’, ‘WALKING IN THE RAIN’ and ‘NEXT SAGA’. After the success of this project Dap-C has collaborated with Leicester based producer Dirty Sweet, and have recorded the next album ‘STREET KARMA’. Guest appearances include the likes of Blak Twang, Fallacey, Skinnyman, Lewis Parker, Stylah, Mr Drastick, Supernova, Rukus, Sir Smurf and Big Cakes, which concludes a project of compelling UKartistry. But without concluding Dap-C’s musical agenda, he also has his next solo album under wraps, “'CHASING THE HIGH' features Shola Ama, Raewkon, Cappadonna, Spider Loc (G-Unit), Kool G Rap, Canibus & some more big suprises!”
Although Dap-C has been fortunate to associate his working schedule with some musical greats, his biggest achievement is signing with top distribution company Hip Hop Village, “that’s what I've benefited most from and has let me take my music to the next level after some shady deals with distributor's like Cargo & Boombox. Distribution has always been a problem for me; many companies will take my products but simply don’t know how to sell it. My 3 year deal with Hip Hop Village has finally given me a proper outlet for my hard work” With this he gives some words of advice to rising artists, “Boombox distribution is a waste of space. Work hard & if you have good music, come to N.G.U. Records!”
Dap-C doesn’t just have confidence in himself but also for the industry, “The scene has been good to me so far, but it’s like anything else you get out what you put in and money talks” N.G.U. Records is also serving some ‘Dap-C assurance’ to label peers Geejay, Mc Beads, Dirty Sweet, Mistalopez and there’s plenty more to give! With the release on Dap-C’s projects early next year and Geejay’s album, it won’t be long before they’ll have the industry buzzing around their sweet honey! So why should we be listening to Dap-C music? “Coz if you don’t then I’ll pin you down and rub poo in your eyes!”
