On January 6th three kings arrived bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and Myrth for the newly born baby Jesus, or so the story goes. Well, this year things are shaping up a little differently and the kings will be arriving in London on December 1st; there will be a lot more than three of them and their gifts will be musical.
Record label BBE has joined forces with the Doctors Orders and Bacardi B Live to celebrate its eleventh birthday. Festivities will spread across Canvas and The Key (in Kings Cross) with rooms hosting the Kings of hip hop, kings of soul, kings of disco and kings of house. The line up includes DJ Premier, Marley Marl, Mr Thing, Louie Vega, Gilles Peterson and Joey Negro.
UK Music gave Doctor's Orders’ DJ Spin Doctor, who’ll also be there on the night, the chance to tell us what it’s all about
So Spin Doctor, how did Doctor's Orders get involved with BBE?
Well me and Pete from BBE are both massive Arsenal fans and chatted about that before we even got on to music. From that alone we knew each other had their head screwed on the right way and that we could get something popping! From there I did a couple of album launch parties and strong armed them into the events at Canvas – I think they’re glad I did.
Hold on its all coming back to us, I thought we just celebrated their tenth and a half birthday, and wasn’t that at Canvas?
We did but when the only venue we feel is 100% suited to the event is closing we had to get in there before they shut their doors and bring our biggest line up yet.
Ok point taken. Both Canvas and The Key are closing down after their NYE parties aren’t they so this will be one of the last events – will you miss them?
I will to be honest, one of the first regular nights I promoted was at The Key, I can’t even remember when that was but I’ve been propping up that bar for quite some time now and I really rate them for what they’ve done there. It’s hard to have three separate venues on the same site and each one with a different vibe so I have to give them props!
Indeed – they will be missed. Remind us how the last birthday bash there went down.
A lot of people having the time of their life dancing, drinking and I would imagine a little more besides.
What’s your best memory of it or is it all a little too hazy?
To be honest it was a bit of a blur but the honour of sharing the decks with Jazzy Jeff, who must be my favourite DJ of all time, was a real highlight of my career not just the night.
There’s no Jazzy Jeff this time round so who are you looking forward to checking out most (we are kind of guessing we'll find you in the hip hop room most of the night right)?
In all honesty I’m hyped about the whole line-up. We decided to pull out all the stops and bring in the big guns as it’s the last time we can use Canvas. Each room is going to be really special but for me spinning alongside Premo and Marley, who between them produced loads of my favourite records of all time, is gonna just be insane!
What about Giles Peterson – you’re thoughts?
One thing I often think is why does he spell Gilles with two LL’s, which obviously confused you too. Other than that I rate his taste in music and football and have nothing but respect for what he has done to push black music in the UK. That’s one reason we have him spinning in the soul room; although many people think of him more as a jazz head everything he does is soulful and his collection of soul records is second to none.
How tough has organising the night been?
The toughest part of the job was confirming the line-up and finding the money to do it for which I have to give props to B-Live and Franklin Marshall. Once we had done that I have been pretty confident in this line up filling the venue so I’ve been fairly chilled. I always work hard on everything I do and this has been no different – I enjoy the hard though so not too tough.
Time for some hard work then – sell it to us – what can we expect?
Seriously you can expect the best clubbing experience of your life. I know that is a bold statement but what other gig can you go to where they will have this quality of DJ in each room? We really have the top dogs from each of their fields spinning and the amazing thing is they have all worked with BBE which is testament to them as a label and their musical philosophy.
That’s all well and good but what we really want to know is will there be a disco ball in the disco room?
If you’re lucky!
It may seem a while a way still but what are you most looking forward to in 2008?
Arsenal lifting the league and cup double.
And where will you be popping up in '08? (We are assuming you were joking about Arsenal)!
All over if I have my way. I have just launched a free weekly Saturday night at Elbow Rooms, The Doctors Orders at Herbal is going from strength to strength and I will be looking promote a couple of decent high profile live gigs too.
