Manchesters Graeme Park Print E-mail

Graham ParkParky's 20th anniversary year continues apace, with gigs at Ministry of Sound, Turnmills and The Cross putting him back in the thick of things in the capital, as well as gigs all over the UK and beyond.

Alongside that 20 year DJing career has been a 10-year radio career with stints on Kiss, Galaxy and now a brace of shows on Juice in Liverpool and Key 103 in Manchester. Parky's has only been on Key since November but has evidently made an impression. After a recent change-around at the station, it was decided to drop dance programming from the weekend, but to keep Parky's bright-and-breezy mix of superb music and chat. The new show will kick off this Saturday, between 6pm-9pm, easing the station out of the sports programming and into the evening, just in time for those people getting ready to go out...

This new format gives Parky an extra hour to play more fab music, and also the room to involve more features, such as "Manchester Calling", entertainment slots, interviews with Manchester's sports stars, and the chance to dust down some of his own timeless Haçienda tracks.

Up-coming Gigs

27-Mar-04 Saturday Déjà Vu, Welly Club, Hull
10-Apr-04 Saturday Bar Room Bar, Birmingham
Ministry of Sound, London
16-Apr-04 Friday Club XS, Carlisle
17-Apr-04 Saturday The Tube, Halifax
30-Apr-04 Friday The Empire, Middlesborough

Many DJs have been significant to the evolution of club culture, but few as significant as Graeme Park. Back in the day, when London was all "rare groove", i-D magazine heard about what was going on at the Haçienda in Manchester and brought Graeme and Mike Pickering down to the capital, for what they called "The Northern House Review". Regrettably, the Haçienda is now an apartment building. At the back of the building is a time-line, carved into steel, detailing the history of the club from Madonna's early performance to its closure. And there's Graeme's name - not once, but twice - carved into the metal for time immemorial. What other DJs - and what other clubs - have had that significance in clubland...?
