  Sam Duckworth, or Get Cape Wear Cape Fly as he’s better known to his fans, will soon release his debut single I Spy. He will already be familiar to most thanks to support slots with the likes of The Magic Numbers and Funeral For A Friend, and appearances at high profile events such as Love Music Hate Racism and Wireless Festival. Sam Duckworth, of Get Cape Wear Cape Fly als hij is beter bekend bij zijn fans, zal binnenkort zijn debuut release single I Spy. Hij zal al bekend bij de meeste slots dankzij de steun met namen als The Magic Numbers en Funeral For A Vriend, en optredens op grote evenementen zoals de Love Music Hate Racism and Wireless Festival. Not just another run of the mill singer-songwriter, the politically aware 20 year-old from Southend splices acoustic guitar strummings with electro beats straight from his lap top. Uk Music caught up with Mr Duckworth backstage at a recent gig for a quick chat. Niet zomaar een run van de molen singer-songwriter, de politiek bewust zijn 20-jarige uit Southend splits akoestische gitaar strummings met elektro-beats recht uit zijn laptop. Uk Muziek gevangen met de heer Duckworth backstage tijdens een recent optreden om snel een praatje. So how are things going for you? En hoe staan de zaken er voor u? Really, good, I’m really excited. Echt waar, goed, ik ben echt opgewonden. Things are moving in the right direction, lots of exciting stuff coming up, lots of festivals, and we’re getting good radio play. Er is beweging in de goede richting, veel spannende dingen komen, veel festivals, en krijgen we goede radio spelen. When did you start getting into music? Wanneer ben je begonnen een beetje met muziek? I’ve always been into music, more so now than ever because it’s kind of consumed my life. Ik heb altijd al in de muziek, dus nu meer dan ooit, omdat het op die soort verbruikt mijn leven. It’s just a massive hobby of mine. Het is alleen een enorme hobby van mij. What were you listening to? Wat was je aan het luisteren naar? Just music that was not pop, just getting into stuff like Green Day and Alkaline Trio. Gewoon muziek die niet werd pop, gewoon een beetje met dingen zoals Green Day en Alkaline Trio. Why the stage name? Waarom het podium naam? I just didn’t want to be going out as Sam Duckworth because I didn’t want this attitude of achy breaky heart singer-songwriter going out and pouring his heart out. Ik wilde niet te gaan als Sam Duckworth, omdat ik niet wil dat deze houding van Achy Breaky Heart singer-songwriter uit te gaan en af te gieten zijn hart uit. People like Bob Mould, Liam Frost, David Gray, I think they’re great, I’m not saying they’re not, thing is I think my music is quite different to what they do and I didn’t want the preconception that I was a solo artist. Mensen als Bob Mold, Liam Frost, David Gray, Ik denk dat ze zijn geweldig, ik zeg niet dat ze niet van, ding is dat ik denk dat mijn muziek is totaal verschillend van wat ze doen en ik wilde niet dat het vooroordeel dat Ik was een solo-artiest. At the time I chose the name I wasn’t sure how it was going to grow. Op het moment dat ik koos voor de naam die ik was niet zeker hoe het zou gaan groeien. Would you say this was a good time for music? Zou je zeggen dit was een goede tijd voor muziek? I think it’sa great time for music. Ik vind het een geweldige tijd voor muziek. You hear all this pop’s coming back, r ‘n’ b is coming back and it’s basically major corporate figures thinking we can’t do any more, we can’t manipulate our audiences, these people have wised up and thought, you know what? U hoort dit alles komt terug pop, r 'n' b komt terug en het is in feite grote corporate cijfers denken we kunnen het niet meer mogen verwachten, kunnen we geen invloed op onze doelgroepen, deze mensen hebben wised up en dacht , Weet je wat? I’m going to buy a CD that’s good. When you have bands like the Automatic coming at number three in the album charts and Bloc Party with top twenty singles, and bands like Forward Russia who you would never expect to be in the charts, it is an exciting time for music. You look at the charts and like 25 out of the top 40 would be bands, and they’d be bands that formed out of their own choice. It’s nice to be in an environment where people are writing great pop music and pop music that comes from a passion from being musicians and being playing in bands as opposed to I want to be famous, have loads of money and I want to shag a footballer. Je kijkt naar de hitlijsten en net als 25 van de top 40 zou zijn bands, en ze worden bands die gevormd zijn van hun eigen keuze. Het is leuk om in een omgeving waar de mensen zijn het schrijven van goede popmuziek en pop muziek die afkomstig is uit een passie wordt muzikanten en wordt het spelen in bands, in tegenstelling tot ik wil beroemd worden, hebben bergen geld en ik wil shag een voetballer. But at the same time, there’s this culture of celebrity where everyone wants their 15 minutes of fame.. Maar tegelijkertijd is er deze cultuur van de beroemdheid waar iedereen wil dat hun 15 minuten van roem .. That’s always going to be the way, it’s always going to be fickle. Dat is altijd nog het middel, het is altijd zal zijn wispelturig. They’ll always latch on to watching other people. Ze zullen altijd niet loslaten te kijken naar andere mensen. It’s almost like they’re displacing things from their own lives onto other people, like celebrities thinking, you know what, my insecurities are becoming their insecurities because I want to get rid of them. Het is bijna alsof ze het verplaatsen dingen uit hun eigen leven op andere mensen, net als beroemdheden denken, weet je wat, mijn onzekerheden worden steeds hun onzekerheden want ik wil ze kwijt. So, there’s always going to be that culture, but it’s great when people like Chris Martin, who’sa celebrity, but uses that platform to do good stuff. Dus, is er altijd zal zijn dat de cultuur, maar het is leuk als mensen als Chris Martin, who'sa beroemdheid, maar maakt gebruik van dat platform is om goed te doen enzo. What inspires your lyrics? Wat inspireert je teksten? Personal stuff that goes on really. Persoonlijke dingen die echt over gaat. People say it’s political, but I think it’s very personal in terms of things like racism affect me, so therefore I write about them. Mensen zeggen dat het politieke, maar ik denk dat het heel persoonlijk in termen van dingen als racisme invloed op mij, dus daarom schrijf ik erover. Why is that issue in particular so important to you? Waarom staat die kwestie in het bijzonder zo belangrijk voor jou? It’s injustice and it’s not something that belongs in our society. It’s something I’ve experienced a couple of times and it really shook me up. Thing is, when Barking has 9 out of its 12 Parliamentary candidates being from the British National Party, you just think this is not right, this needs to be sorted out. Het is onrecht en het is niet iets wat thuishoort in onze samenleving. Het is iets wat ik ervaren heb een paar keer en het echt schudde me omhoog. Thing is, wanneer Barking heeft 9 van de 12 kandidaten die uit de parlementaire de British National Party, je gewoon denkt dat dit niet rechts, dit moet geregeld worden. Would you say that people are disillusioned at mainstream politics? Zou je zeggen dat mensen die gedesillusioneerd zijn op mainstream politiek? The youth are always going to be disillusioned with politics, the simple reason is they don’t think they can connect with politicians and it’s because they expect politicians to be a mirror of themselves. De jongeren zijn altijd zal zijn ontgoocheld over de politiek, de simpele reden is dat ze niet denken dat ze verbinding kunnen maken met politici en dan is dat omdat zij verwachten dat politici op een afspiegeling van zichzelf. I don’t necessarily connect with politicians, but I know that if I’m not going out there and voting or thinking politically I’m going to be in a situation where we have BNP candidates. Ik ben het niet per se een verbinding met politici, maar ik weet dat als ik ga niet naar buiten en het stemgedrag of de politiek denk ik zal in een situatie waar we BNP kandidaten. Or David Cameron going out and being like 'I listen to Radiohead and I’m into new music', then going round saying that music being played on Radio 1 on a Saturday and Sunday night influences gun and knife crime. Of David Cameron uit te gaan en worden als' Ik luister naar Radiohead en ik ben naar nieuwe muziek 'en dan ga ronde te zeggen dat muziek die wordt gespeeld op Radio 1 op een zaterdag-en zondagavond invloeden pistool en mes criminaliteit. In other words, black music, urban music, r ‘n’ b is the cause of crime in country. The disillusionment simply comes from the fact that Tony Blair went to private school, David Cameron went to private school and 90% of our country didn’t go to private school. Although their views may be 95% correct, people don’t feel like they can connect with them personally. Met andere woorden, zwarte muziek, stedelijke muziek, r 'n' b is de oorzaak van criminaliteit in het land. De ontgoocheling komt simpelweg voort uit het feit dat Tony Blair ging naar de particuliere school, David Cameron ging naar de prive-school en 90% van ons land niet naar de particuliere school. That’s one of the great things about having a platform, doing interviews and playing live, is that you can make people realise how dire we are in this situation. Do you think music is the right platform then to raise such important issues? Denk je dat de muziek is het juiste platform om vervolgens zulke belangrijke onderwerpen? I think every platform is the right platform, whether that be having a conversation in the street, a conversation in the pub, or the seeing Football Against Racism banner in the centre because of the World Cup. Ik denk dat elk platform is het juiste platform, of het nu een gesprek in de straat, een gesprek in de kroeg, of het zien van Football Against Racism banner in het centrum vanwege de World Cup. Can you see youself still doing this in 10 years time? Zou je zelf nog doen dit in 10 jaar tijd? I’ll be doing this ‘til I die, whether I’m getting paid to do it or not. Ik zal dit te doen 'til ik sterf, of ik krijg betaald om het te doen of niet. It’s what I want to do and it feels like it’s the right thing for me to be doing and I love it.
