 The artists formally known as The Mike Rosenberg Band return with a new name and new single! De kunstenaars formeel bekend als The Mike Rosenberg Band terug met een nieuwe naam en nieuwe single! Now known as Passenger, the band have been making waves on the live scene thanks to support slots with Lior and Seth Lakeman. Nu bekend als Passenger, de band is het maken van golven op de live-scene dankzij de steun slots met Lior en Seth Lakeman. UK Music caught up with Mike and co-songwriter Andrew Phillips for a quick chat on the current music scene and being a penguin for a day. UK Music gevangen met Mike en co-songwriter Andrew Phillips om snel een praatje over de huidige muziek-scene en wordt een pinguïn voor een dag. So, why the name change? Dus, waarom de naam veranderen? Mike: Well, we’ve always wanted to come up with a name that summed us up and sort of believe that band names have just got to hit you. It hasn’t up until very recently so we went with Mike Rosenberg Band which a sort of working title. Andrew: No, more of a development really. Andrew: Nee, meer van een ontwikkeling echt. I think it’s just more of the main catch of what we were trying to do anyway. I mean we’re still playing the same songs and we’re still writing the same way, but we just feel that the name puts it across to people better and gives them a little flavour of what we’re trying to do. Tell us about your new single Wicked Man’s Rest. Vertel ons over uw nieuwe single Wicked Man's Rest. Mike: We sort of wrote it about two years ago probably. Mike: We soort van schreef hij ongeveer twee jaar geleden waarschijnlijk. It took a long while for it to become what it is now. Het duurde een hele poos voor zij kan uitgroeien tot wat het nu is. I think it’sa really good introduction to what we do. Ik denk dat het een echt goede inleiding op wat we doen. I’m really pleased with the lyrics, and as for the musical side of things, it’sa cross breed between acoustic, folky music and electronica and sort of more hip hop beats. I think it really works as a taster of what to expect from us. Ik denk dat het echt werkt als een voorproefje van wat te verwachten van ons. How do you think you fit into the current music scene? Hoe denk je dat je passen in de huidige muziekscene? Andrew: I think we’re all about taking classic song forms really. We’re all about our songs, we’re all about songwriting, but we’re also taking acoustic, folky, if you like, song tradition and making it really contemporary. So I suppose the bands that we really like are bands like Turin Brakes and Tuung and people like that who are looking and just making them really modern and just seeing how traditional songwriting stands up in today’s world. There’s so much fantastic song writing out there at the moment. Er is zoveel fantastische song schrijven die er op dit moment. Andrew: We listen to a lot of stuff that perhaps isn’t what you would call songwriting, obvious songwriting stuff, like we listen to a lot of electronica stuff, but it’s still great music or great songs but they might not be verse chorus, ordinary songs that you would recognise. Andrew: We luisteren naar een hoop dingen die misschien niet is wat u zou willen noemen songwriting aperte songwriting spul, net als wij luisteren naar een hoop electronica spul, maar het is nog veel prachtige muziek of liedjes, maar ze misschien niet vers chorus, gewoon liedjes die je zou erkennen.
We listen to Tuung a lot, Bat For Lashes, who’s another Brighton artist. Wij luisteren naar Tuung veel, Bat Voor zweepslagen, wie is Brighton een andere kunstenaar. She’sa great songwriter but also great sound, great mood. Ze een geweldige songwriter, maar ook een geweldig geluid, geweldige sfeer. Do you think the current music scene is healthy then? Denkt u dat de huidige muziekscene gezond is dan? Mike: Yeah definitely, certainly parts of it. Mike: Ja zeker, zeker gedeelten daarvan. Since Myspace, in the last couple of years there seems to be an awful lot of new music around, very accessible, that we listen to. Sinds Myspace, in de laatste paar jaar lijkt er een heleboel nieuwe muziek rond, heel toegankelijk, dat we luisteren. So yeah, the music scene today is massive and brilliant. I think there’sa really interesting crossover of producers and songwriters working together and different music traditions being blended and I think that’s really exciting. What was your most nerve wracking moment then? Wat was uw meest zenuw moeite moment dan? Andrew: Oh it’s always when things go wrong at gigs really. Andrew: Oh, het is altijd wanneer er iets misgaat tijdens optredens echt. It’s always the same old stuff, like somebody’s gear packs up or the microphone stops working or something falls over. The last on stage catastrophe was last night when the keyboard player’s lap top packed up just at the start of the song, but you just get used to carrying on. I don’t think anybody else would notice to be honest, but it’s just something you get used to in this job. Ik denk niet dat iemand anders zou aankondiging om eerlijk te zijn, maar het is gewoon iets wat je gebruikt om in deze job.
That’s the thrill of it as well, that things might go wrong but they might also go brilliantly right. Dat is de kick van zo goed, dat dingen mis kunnen gaan, maar ze kan ook gaan briljant rechts.
