UKMusic.com has 5 copies of Hed Kandi: Nu Cool to give away!
On January 9th Hed Kandi return full circle to their first compilation series ‘Nu Cool’, lovingly compiled for 2006 by Hed Kandi’s Phil Faversham. Nu Cool takes the listener on a history lesson of quality black music from the seventies to the present over two discs, featuring tracks by artists including The Jackson Five, Incognito, Barefoot, Carleen Anderson, and Plantlife.
The first two Nu Cool compilations were released in 1998 and 1999 on Jazz FM Records and, featuring tracks by Erykah Badu, Leena Conquest, Norma Jean Bell and Atmosphere, were the imprint for the embryonic Hed Kandi sound. (Little known fact: the third Nu Cool compilation was also the first ever Hed Kandi comp). As different Hed Kandi strands such as Beach House, Back To Love, Disco Kandi and Twisted Disco gathered momentum, Nu Cool took a break. Until now…
CD1 kicks off with the bouncy, quirky soul of Beef Wellington before moving through deep West London remixes by 4 Hero and Bugz in The Attic to the strutting, moochy funk of ‘One Of Us’ by Jaguar. Soul Mekanik provide ‘Wanna Get Wet’, an eighties-style house groover. Like a multi-layered history lesson, rare gems are combined with past-referencing tracks such as Stockholm Cyclo’s ‘Sticky’ which re-works Tyrone Bronson’s electro classic ‘The Smurf’. Real dancefloor ‘euphoria’ can be found in Teddy Pendergrass’s storming Philly classic ‘You Can’t Hide From Yourself’, before the CD finishes with recent anthem La Ritournelle by Sebastian Tellier.
On CD2, both Barefoot’s Pride (A Deeper Love) and Nostalgia 77’s heavy duty Seven Nation Army suggest the craze for intelligent cover versions should not go away. British talent is rife throughout, including Terri Walker’s ‘This Is My Time’. As with Luchini by Camp Lo, she takes Dynasty’s ‘Adventures In The Land of Music’ and makes it her own. The Jackson Five melds with Edwyn Starr on ‘Body Language (Do The Love Dance)’ and, as the title suggests, will get the people raving and romancing. Dance-moves will be flung to the very end as the CD concludes with the broken beat of 4 Hero’s massive ‘Hold it Down’.
