WIN Dr Octagon Album
Following the mighty showdown between our very own Switch & Sinden and Diplo’s Mad Decent army back in May, the dastardly double S duo return to fabric for round 4 of Get Familiar with a stellar line-up of hip hop and dancehall luminaries in tow. Kool Keith brings his unique brand of supergalactic space-hop to Room 1 with long-time co-conspirator DJ Kutmasta Kurt on the turntables for a very special show. Alongside digital dancehall dons The South Rakkas Crew, all star jam busters DJ Ayres and DJ Eleven from NYC’s The Rub touch down in EC1 making July’s Get Familiar perhaps the most diverse session yet.
Kool Keith comes thick and fast in many incarnations. Whether as a founding member of the legendary Ultramagentic MCs, or in the guises of his renegade rap personas (including Dr. Octagon, Dr Dooom, The Black Elvis, or even Mr. Gerbick; the half-man, half-shark, 208 year old uncle of the aforementioned Dr. O), he has consistently confused, bemused and amazed critics and rap fans alike, time after time. Having established himself as an innovative and highly original lyricist over a 20 year career, Keith Thornton has never been afraid to explore the outer reaches of his psyche from the playful to the downright carnal. All the while pioneering the stream-of-consciousness rap style that’s inspired a vast array of leftfield hip hop artists ever since. Keith teamed up with Kutmasta Kurt on production for his “Sex Style” and “First Come, First Served” with Kurt also contributing to his classic Dr. Octagon “Dr. Octagonecologyst” album on James Lavelle’s Mo Wax imprint in 1996. Kicking off his DJ and production career in the mid 80’s, Kutmasta Kurt went on to produce beats for the likes of the Beastie Boys, Planet Asia, Blackalicious and lent his boom bap expertise to the Dilated People’s hit “Work The Angles” in 2000. Having established his own label “Threshold Recordings” he then re-united with Keith for the Diesel Truckers LP before releasing his own best-of album, “Redneck Games” in 2004.
The South Rakkas Crew has risen to prominence in the dancehall world and further a field as their productions storm charts and record boxes the world over. Comprised of producers Shaw, Alex G, Riprock and associate member DJ Ninja Kid (their man on the ground in Jamaica), Worldwide interest was aroused with the release of the “Clappas” and “Red Alert” riddims (released on the Greensleeves Rhythm Album series) before the crew independently released the “Bionic Ras” cut on their own Riddim Riddin’ series – the track which spawned Sizzla’s “Spring Break” amongst others and attracted yard heroes such as Beenie Man, Elephant Man, Bounty Killer, Capleton, Lady Saw, Mr. Vegas, Ce'Cile, Mr. Easy, Sizzla and T.O.K to the camp. Their distinctive digital dancehall sound owes as much to the underground electronic dance music forms of grime and techno as to the more authentic, bubbling Jamaican and Soca rhythms. This unique, refreshing take on dancehall has brought remix requests from the likes of Bob Marley, Duran Duran, Lily Allen, MIA, Beck and Twista of late. Having just re-worked DJ Shadow’s “This Time”, it’s onwards and upwards for the SRC as they continue to chop up and re-construct many of the reggae/dancehall scene’s bashiest tracks. For their Get Familiar performance they bring their live show to the UK for the first time. Make no mistake, these cats know how to smash a dance. Joining the SRC are the original party starters DJ Ayres and DJ Eleven from NYC’s The Rub. Back in 1992 The Rub began with a simple goal – to create a monthly jam at Brooklyn’s Southpaw venue. Their infectious manifesto for fun - a sweaty dance floor and no VIPS or celebrity DJs combined with an unparalleled combination of hip hop, disco, reggae, funk and soul lead to The Rub being recognized as the best no-holds-barred disco in the whole of New York. Now touring their sound across the globe, The Rub complement their club nights with a stack of vinyl and mixtapes, released at breakneck pace, including the “It’s the Motherf*cking Remix” series, numerous Tour CDs, their “Sunglasses is a Must” double CD with ATrak & their recent “Rub Up” CD – a skanking dancehall throwdown of epic proportions. Having DJ’d alongside the likes of Public Enemy, Fat Joe, Snoop Dogg, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Slick Rick, A-Trak, DJ Premier, Justice and Grandmaster Flash they hit fabric armed with their exclusive blends, re-edits and one-off nuggets. Big in the game? You bet.
Meanwhile, Tayo’s Cool and Deadly residency once again disturbs the bassbins in Room 3. After their amazing live show here in May, current Kuduro champions Buraka Som Sistema storm the building for a DJ set alongside dubstep’s leading light Skream. Dub aficionado Rob Smith completes the DJ line-up accompanied by Joe Peng on vocal duties. Room 2 welcomes familiar faces Evil Nine and Marine Parade boss man Adam Freeland alongside long-time residents Joe Ransom and Ali B.
