It was the year that saw the Crazy Frog dominate the UK charts and Madonna proved she still has what it takes to get to number one spot. TV hopefuls were transformed into instant stars.  Arctic Monkeys and Sway made names for themselves – all by themselves.  Acts like Franz Ferdinand, Sigur Ros, Eels and Elbow all returned with quality tracks.  The Magic Numbers kicked arse and made lots of new friends, despite walking off stage and throwing a tantrum on Top of the Pops!

Animated band The Gorillaz had a top year and a fantastic album and Kayne West confirmed his position at the top of the r’n’b hip-hop tree.

2005 was the year of good British guitar bands.  We Are Scientists made lots of noise and the Kaiser Chiefs – a five-piece indie band from Leeds – bagged the third biggest selling record of the year to become one of the most successful new bands of 2005.

The UK Singles chart was re-vamped to include downloads, changing the face of the UK Singles Chart forever...

UKMusic.com takes a look back at the year that was 2005… the music stars who had a good year and those who will want to forget it!


January
Busted Spilt!  A sad start to the year for pop fans everywhere as boy band Busted announced they were going their separate ways following Charlie Simpson's decision to leave the band to start his own band Fightstar.

Elvis Claims 1000th Number 1
January bought good news for Elvis Presley fans as the singer claimed his 1,000th number one with the re-release of hit single One Night - his 20th UK chart topper!

Kylie Sues Pete Waterman Pop superstar Kylie Minogue announced she was suing British record producer Peter Waterman over royalties from her 2002 Greatest Hits album.  Not such a good start to the year for poor old Pete…

Franz Ferdinand WIN Gongs At Brit and NME awards As well as winning big at The Brits rockers Franz Ferdinand picked up best album at the NME Awards for their debut CD and their stomping rock tune Take Me Out won best single.

March
Edith Bowman wins Celebrity Fame Academy BBC Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman won the final of Celebrity Fame Academy, with more than 10 million people watching her victory.

McFly Comic Relief Number 1 Pop band McFly bag the number one spot with official Comic Relief track 'All About You / You've Got A Friend'.

Nelly's Sister Dies Nelly's sister, Jackie Donohue sadly dies after loosing her battle against leukemia aged just 31.

UK Singles Chart Revamped!
Legal downloads included in the UK Singles Chart for the first time, changing the face of the UK Charts forever.

Kylie Diagnosed with Cancer The world is shocked to hear that the pop princess has surgery to remove a tumour from her breast, days after her diagnosis. She has to abandon the rest of her tour and cancel Glastonbury: "My heartfelt thanks to the incredible number of people who have sent messages of love and support... I want to reassure you that I am being well taken care of." Wishing Kylie well and a full recovery for 2006.

Crazy Frog tops the UK Charts The Crazy Frog makes history (and drives everyone mad) as ringtones cross over into the UK charts for the very first time.  Setting a trend for 2006?  We hope not…!

Destiny's Child split!  Girl band Destiny’s Child announce that they are splitting up to concentrate on ‘personal goals and solo efforts’.  The girl’s took the world by storm and had a string of hit singles since 1998 including chart-toppers Independent Women and Survivor.

The Michael Jackson Incident Pop star Michael Jackson is cleared of child abuse allegations with the jury finding the singer not guilty of all 10 charges.  The case lasted four months and dominated media headlines everywhere.  Jackson was accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old boy, attempting to abduct the child's family, and plying children with alcohol. Outside the courthouse, screaming fans threw confetti and released doves at the news of the verdict.

DJ John Peel Added To UK Music Hall of Fame The late BBC Radio 1 DJ became a new entry to the UK Music Hall of Fame, which honours outstanding contribution to music.

Magic Numbers Storm Off Top Of The Pops Guest presenter on Top of the Pops, Richard Bacon caused a stir when The Magic Numbers walked off stage after he introduced them during a rehearsal as "a fat melting pot of talent"! The Magic Numbers described his comments as “derogatory, unfunny remarks”. Slightly oversensitive perhaps..?!

Antony and the Johnsons Win Mercury Music Prize Surprise Mercury Music Prize win for Antony and the Johnsons for their album I Am A Bird Now.

Britney’s Baby Boy
Britney Spears and her husband Kevin Federline had a baby boy called Preston Michael.  But fans aren’t happy with Kevin’s shenanigans and later launch a website urging the pop princess to dump her hubbie!

Lemar Wins Big At Mobo’s Lemar picks up two gongs at the Mobos for best album and best UK act making him the biggest Mobo winner of 2005.

Coldplay Win Best Act At Q Awards Coldplay beat Oasis, Green Day, U2 and Muse to the best act in the world title at the Q Awards 2005.

Liberty X Do Children In Need Song Liberty X chosen to perform the official Children in Need song - their own version of A Night To Remember with proceeds going to the charity.

Kate Moss and Pete Doherty Cocaine Scandal The pair start dating in January and Kate trips up when someone secretly takes pictures of her snorting cocaine and sells them to the papers. She loses three big contracts over the scandal, apologises to the public and goes into rehab. The following month Pete checks into the same Arizona clinic.

So Solid Producer Jailed So Solid producer Carl Morgan jailed for life for the murder of love rival Colin Scarlett.

Gerry Halliwell Pregnant Former Spice girl Gerry Halliwell announces she is expecting a baby with secret boyfriend and British scriptwriter Sacha Gervasi.

Madonna Hung Up On Top Spot  Madonna's first single in two years, Hung Up, went straight to number one, knocking Westlife from the top spot. Proving the pop queen still has what it takes to get to number one!

Take That Reunite Take That reunite for a special documentary and plan a tour minus Robbie Williams… party pooper!

Shayne Ward Wins X Factor
Shayne Ward is crowned winner of The X Factor 2005, beating Journey South and Andy Abrahams to the title with over 10.8 million votes.

Madonna Sets Download Chart Record Madonna set a new record in the download charts with Hung Up holding the top spot for seven weeks!

Mutya Quits The Sugababes Sugababes star Mutya Buena sensationally quit the chart-topping British girl group and within 24 hours new member Amelle Berrabah is unveiled.  No time wasted there!

Gwen Stefani Pregnant Five-time Grammy nominee Gwen Stefani announces she is pregnant with her first child… Congrats!


Well it’s been quite an eventful year and who knows what 2006 will bring… Will Britney and Kevin make it through another 12 months?  Will Madonna be able to squeeze herself into an even smaller leotard?  Will Pete Doherty ever be satisfied with a quiet night in?  Will the Sugababes accept their new band member or scratch her eyes out? Miaow…!  Whatever happens, let’s hope Santa brings us another year of fresh new music talent!
